Sydney Hotel - unplanned family medical emergency

OK as if there is any such thing as a "planned family medical emergency" sorry my choice of words is poor

My mother in law flew to Sydney last week and shortly after completing the flight found herself in hospital, doubled over in pain, signing a release form authorizing abdominal surgery which went very well (if it went otherwise, she'd be permanently different or dead -- I'll omit the details but a subset of those reading will readily understand "permanently different" in context of emergency abdominal cut and paste)

I'd desperately welcome recommendation for a hotel, small, quiet, lovely and well run, in Sydney or on a beach nearby, where we could book a room for a week or so, starting Thursday this week, where she could continue recovery for the week before she's got her 14 hour return flight to Los Angeles.

The doctors say she's fine and will be getting around on her own by the time she's scheduled to leave hospital but all the same my wife will fly to Sydney to help her get home OK.

I'm hoping, in the meantime, for recommendations for a place she could stay that would be nice, not too noisy, with a nice view (since she won't be doing much more than resting and enjoying the view)

Many thanks, in advance, everyone.

Hi Msanjola,

Where is your Mother in Law located?
Assuming she will want to be reasonably close to her medicos,I'm sure we can come up with something suitable if you let us know what areas.

Would she be happy/able to stay in an apartment rather than a hotel?
Or would she prefer/need a higher degree of service?

She's in Sydney near Janalli I think

We'd expect room service is the key amenity that differentiates apartment versus hotel or bed and breakfast

So higher level of service is probably best, in this circumstance, although I don't imagine we can afford the oriental ,,,

Hi again,

I'm hoping someone else will chime in here as the South isn't an area I know well at all.

This link might give you something to start with, though:

Good luck - it's tough when something goes wrong & you're so far away

In Sydney, I guess view means beach (or harbour).

The best suggestion I can make is to have a look at wotif.com.au.

Put in Sydney, rather than Sydney CBD, and then, look at what's offered. Bondi, Coogee and Brighton all have beach hotel offerings on the south side - where Jannali is.

Quest Cronulla looked OK - but ?availability.

If you want to go across the harbour, try Manly. The North Sydney Harbourview Hotel often gets a mention here - and may be worth looking at.

Ravesi's at Bondi looked good and is in a good location - but then I noticed the construction noise sign.

The first hotel on the Sydney list - Blue - would be interesting - on the Harbour - and some celebrity viewing on offer (makes a difference from looking at the view!)

Best of luck!

Do you have the name of the hospital? I can only think of St George as it's near the airport. Or is she at Sutherland hospital? Cronulla beach area would be the closest to the hospital and the beach but you would still need to rent a car to get around as it's more convenient. From memory there is a Best Western near that hospital. You might want to ask the hospital as they may be able to recommend you a B & B nearby.

We stayed at several Quests during our Oct-Nov 2006 trip and found them (with the exeption of an overnight in Townsville) to be very affordable and nice. So if a Quest is in your MIL's preferred area, I wouldn't hesitate to book there. Book through www.wotif.com as mentioned above.

Hoping all goes well.

Many thanks for the kind responses.

My MIL's at Sutherland - Shire hospital and is getting very good care, doing lots better (thanks all for your kind best wishes) so the search for a nice spot for her is taking on a more lighthearted quality

I've spent a lot of time on wotif.com, and the ourshire.com link was helpful too.

The suggestion to ask at the hospital for a nice B&B was a good one we'll follow up on.

Thanks everyone

For Sydney beach side accommodation you might check out Rydges Hotel Cronulla (near the hospital in the Sutherland Shire in the south), the Manly Pacific Hotel (northside), or the Swiss-Grand Resort and Spa at Bondi, or the Crowne Plaza, Coogee (both reasonably close to the city).

For a superb harbour view framed by the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Harbourside Apartments at McMahon's Point, which are self catering and would be too much of a walk up the hill to shops etc for anyone recuperating, but otherwise a very short, flat walk from the ferry which stops almost straight in front, or a nearby bus stop.
