Macquarie Manor in Hobart

Tripadvisor.com says this is the "most popular" hotel in Hobart and, indeed, the reviews from Trip Advisor are uniformly good.

They appear to be within walking distances of restaurants and have given us a decent rate for our four-night stay.

Any comments?

Thanks,
BigBlue

BigBlue, you have previously been given some very good hotel suggestions based on the questions and requirements you posed at the time. If you want to go with this hotel then that is up to you but why ask questions then totally ignore the answers?

We happen to love the Macquarie Manor, but it is quite a trek (at least 10 minutes) to the wharf restaurants, and your trip back would be uphill. They offer off-street parking but that is down a steep hill in the back. There is no lift except for luggage. If walking is an issue for you, I would go with one of Liz' suggestions and stay closer to Salamanca Place.

Liz, I seem to have struck a negative chord with you. For openers, I have ignored no one's answers. Rather, I am gathering information and trying to make an informed decision. Second, it is entirely possible to get good advice from people and still make a decision based on what is best for one.

Macquarie Manor offers a 6 p.m. day of arrival cancellation policy with no deposit taken so the room is now guaranteed to me. This gives me the greatest flexibility possible and allows me the opportunity to check out other options. It is far better to have a viable hotel booked in advance and cancel than it is to try and find one after all their rooms have been booked.

A different source had recommended Somerset Pier and we have since learned that the walls are paper-thin. As I am particularly noise-sensitive, that would not do for us. Oliverandharry have offered some useful information re Macquarie Manor and that is precisely what I can't get from looking at maps. Hence, I ask questions.

Liz, rather than take shots at me why don't you just consider not answering my questions and ignore them instead?

Liz, I forgot to mention in my reply that, specifically based on a trip report here, we are booked into and have put a deposit down at Woolmer's Cottages and look forward to our stay there.

Fyi, I've just revisited Tripadvisor.com and have sent off a request to The Old Woolstore for our lodging. I've cancelled the Macquarie Manor based on the pertinent and helpful input from Oliverandharry and the strong recommendation from Liz for the former.

Thanks,
BigBlue

Two blocks from the Woolstore on flat ground are the wharf restaurants, 1 block or rather just across the road in the Grand Chancellor Hotel is another good restaurant which has/ or used to have a nice smorgesborg, 30 yards from the Woolstore is a steak place ( name I cannot remember) at the Woolstore they also have meals and drinks available at the bar, one block you can get to the Drunken Admiral which I like as its got atmosphere and nice food but as for cost - Fish Frenzy will set you back about $45Au for two for a good meal of scallops, fish, chips, salad and perhaps other seafood - for chips enough for 2 people it will cost about $6 Au and they are great ones too. Don't just take the wine that is suggested on the blackboard but ask the waiter at

Oooops ask the waiter at the counter which is the best wine. If you are in Hobart when the Salamanca market is on then have something to eat from one of those stalls - cost about $5. You will have a kitchen at the Woolstore and can heat up things or cook yourself. If you have a car then you may want to pick up something wonderful from the Libscombe Larder on Sandy Beach Road ( as someone at the hotel for directions). I got the best ever orange syrup cake there the other day not to mention a heap of take -away meals and some wonderful cakes etc.
Did I rub you up the wrong way BB - must behave - will make that my NY resolution!

like lizF said the Grand Chacellor Hotel , is right on the waterfront has a nice restaurant with a view.

Also right cross the street from the Grand Chancellor is a big green colored barn like building that serves only seafood( bust place).

I think it is called Muirs Seafood, you cannot miss it , and to your Left as you face Muirs is "The Drunken Admiral ".

Also you are now within walking distance to the Salamanca Market( to your Right) area(2-3 blocks )it's loooong string of buildings with many shops and eating places with sidewalk table.

You won't starve in Hobart !!.. enjoy

Seems like a good choice, Blue. We stayed at Woolmers based on Liz' rec, then Betsy (who has not posted a report) stayed there based on mine. It is a very wonderful place, and I highly recommend you order the hamper dinner they can do for you. Not much available for an evening meal in Longford without a long drive down a very dark road. You're really in the country, there!
