I've tried Air NZ, Qantas and United's Web sites and the best fare I was quoted for my August trip to Brisbane was $912.

Does this sound particularly good or bad?

Scurry, you didn't say where you're departing from. Qantas is now flying direct to Brissy from LAX. Assuming you got one of those direct flights and your fare includes the $100 or so in taxes/fees/etc, then that's a pretty good price! If your coming from somewhere further than LA, then you did even better!

I am leaving from the bay area -- but I think i can do better on Southwest from SJC or SFO to LAX than the $140 that Qantas.

Are the Qantas LAX to BNE flights really direct or do they still stop in Auckland?

There's no stop in Auckland or Sydney - the flight goes straight to Brisbane. Qantas just started these flights in May or June.
