Fare to Sydney from Sfo
Folks,
Need your input here.
What is the approx. fare to Sydney from Sfo in the first week of July? Is $1,200 for a direct flight too much? Should I wait until March-April to get a lower fare?
Last year when we bought our tickets to Vienna, the fare was high in Jan-Feb and then had gone down significantly in April. Any idea if that could be the case for Australia as well?
Thanks in advance for the help.
Mita

Hi Mita,
There's no way to predict WHAT those wacky airlines will do from minute to minute much less from month to month! If you're looking to travel from SFO (I'm also in the Bay area), I assume that you're talking about going on UA then; and there HAS been rumblings about them quitting that So. Pacific route altogether.
My advice is that if you're locked into a specific set of dates and can only travel during a set timeframe, then you're better off getting your tickets immediately.
If, however, you have some "wiggle room" and are more flexible, then wait and see if the fare is lower.

Check out priceline.com and orbitz.com for specials. July is winter here so fares should be cheaper, I would imagine. We would pay around $1200 US now for return flights to SFO so sounds about right. See travel.com.au for AUD prices ex Sydney to SFO and then you can compare. Also the bird flu in Vietnam may keep future prices low to Oz as many people are frightened to travel due to these viruses.

Mita,
Good news for you (and all my other clients in the Bay area)....Air NZ is going to begin DIRECT FLIGHTS FROM SFO in June! (I've been nattering at our Qantas rep about this for years to no avail)
Not only that, in June, they are going to have "low introductory fares" of $747 in Economy.
