We're booked at the Centra Auckland Airport Hotel during a long layover. It's 4 km from the airport and looks very nice, but I doubt it has a 'gardenlike atmosphere'.

The Centra is about the closest, not the cheapest though and a couple of cheaper ones sort of just over the road - not really park like though.

What is really annoying about having to stay over is now you will owe the $25NZ departure tax, which you pay after you check in for your flight. There are all sort of opinions about how long it can take to do this, but you can pay in cash (NZ obviously) or on a credit card, but apparently you get charged as a 'cash advance' if you do this.

Hi,

Just by way of an update, the departure charge is no longer payable at the airport as it used to be - it is included in the ticket price. About time too.

Have a look at: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/ar...ectid=10519441

Cheers

Maybe hypatia will have a win if she is having an unplanned stopover and it wasn't factored into her ticket.

Wonder how much more people are paying now that it is inclusive with a ticket.

igrane -

Thanks for that link. I'd just asked my travel agent about the tax last week and she didn't know a thing about it either way. We're only in Auckland for eight hours on a layover between the US and Perth, and we assumed we'd have to pay the tax, so it was a nice surprise to find out otherwise.

I've sent the link to my travel agent too. Now she knows.

You might have been better to leave her in the dark Mel as now she could for a planned stopover find that she has to factor it into the ticket price and if she didn't know maybe you'd have got away without it.

She may not have known, but I suspect her computer did and the tax is no doubt in the ticket price anyway.
