Best Way to Get to South Island
We are flying into Auckland and want to go directly to South Island. What's the best way to do it? Should we fly? If so, suggestions for airlines?
Any suggestions for great places to stay in Christchurch?
Thanks in advance.

Flying would certainly be the most direct way, if you don't want to spend any time on the North Island.
I don't know where you're traveling from, but Air New Zealand has direct flights now from LAX and San Francisco to Christchurch.

mrschava,
Since I assume you are booked either on Air NZ or Qantas for your flight from LA it would probably be esier and less hassle for you to chat with your TA and get them to extend your travel through to Christchurch. Both airlines fly the route.
If you wait until you arrive you may end up paying a premium for the flight due to short notice. Check online as both airlines have specials.
With Air NZ you are asked for a New Zealand address to take advantage of the cheaper domestic fares. I would suggest you just use the address of the accomodation you are staying in once you arrive in NZ. The tickets are etickets anyway (just print the confirmation off) so nothing is actually sent out to you.
Cheers

I'm doing the exact same thing in few weeks. Bought a one-way ticket on www.qantas.com from AKL-CHC for ~$100US, all in. Also bought another one-way from Queenstown to Rotorua for about the same $.
Have a great trip!

Agree with the other posters. There are plenty of flights and you should not pay anymore than $100NZ.
Where would you like to stay in Christchurch? There are plenty of places in the city at a wide price range. There are also some decent hotels close to the airport with free shuttle so let me know.
