Thailand Massage - Somewhat embarrassing question about size
No, I am not a troll and this is a serious question.
I am planning a trip to Thailand and understand a reasonably priced massage is one of the joys of a visit there. I am also a large sized person. Will this pose a problem?
I understand in some places you are given some sort of "loose fitting" clothing to wear during the treatments instead of street clothes. What is the likelihood they will have plus sizes to fit me? I don't want to embarrass myself or the masseuse if they would somehow not want to massage a larger sized person. Should I say something if I call ahead to schedule an appointment?
If anyone has suggestions, or thinks I should just avoid spa/massage treatments please let me know. I suppose I could stick to foot massage, my feet aren't really that fat

I'm just a little skinny whippet and my thai masseurs have me in the most extraordinary positions. I can't imagine how you, physically, could do it.
Or the masseurs. You might squash them. They're all very little in Thailand.
Go and have a lovely oily, smooth, non-acrobatic massage instead. They won't give a rat's arse whether you're large or small - or if they do, they'll be WAY too polite to let on. It's their business.
Absolutely you must go. Free Willy. You'll find it a liberation.

Remember a 'Thai' massage is very physical so quite different from say a relaxing 'oil' massage.
I agree with what others have said and also emphasise about 'not worrying', it's a non-issue, whether large or small, thin or 'large' it's certainly no biggy to worry about at all.

I am a Gentleman of Considerable Size. I also enjoy massages.
I am not a fan of Thai massage, so I don't have them. However, if you are large, it is very likely that you would not be comfortable in any clothing they would offer. Bring your own, or skip that massage.
Another issue shows up in some locations for the aromatherapy or similar massages where oil is used. Some places will offer underclothing to you, and these also are unlikely to fit or be comfortable. It's perfectly ok for you either to use your own or to suggest that you use only towels.
I have NEVER gotten the slightest hint from a masseur that they'd prefer giving a massage to a toned person rather than a spheroid such as myself. When you go for a massage, the masseur is providing a professional service; you are not going out on a date.

Thank you all for your thoughtful answers and sharing your own experiences, even Dogster, LOL, Free Willy indeed!
I don't think I am into the rough stuff, not just because of being larger, but it doesn't seem that it would be very relaxing. I will stick with the oil massage and just use a towel, that is a great idea.
I am feeling much better. I know it sounds silly to worry about this, but I was, and now I won't anymore.

The Thai style massage was one of the best parts of our 5 week visit. If you do not feel comfortable with a full Thai massage, at least have a "foot massage". You just wear your own clothes (best to have shorts or pant's legs that will roll up), sit in a big Barcalounger style chair and are massaged starting at your feet, up your legs to the knees, your arms, hands, shoulders, neck, head and even your face. Its all done fully clothed, lasts nearly an hour and costs the unbelievable low price of about $8 USD. Better than dessert! Don't miss it.

While I agree that an oil massage is very relaxing be prepared for the fact that (if you are male) you could be offered "extra services", euphemistically known as a "happy ending". You can always say no but its better to be prepared for the possibility. Hands do wander!
