Stupid Question Re: Peninsula BKK

So, for one of the legs of our honeymoon, we are staying at the Peninsula, and we really want a balcony room. No problem. I thought I would just check and see what the going rate was for the Terrace Suite, in case we could afford it and stay in an even better balcony room. So, I emailed the Peninsula and asked what the daily rate would be for 4 nights next June. They wrote me back and told me it is $1200. They did not say whether this was per night or for all 4 nights. I am assuming it is per night. I am pretty sure it is per night. But, I thought I would ask the knowledgeable people here whether they think the suite would actually go for $300/night or if my assumptions are correct.

I would feel really stupid writing the hotel back and asking, so I figured I would sound stupid here instead!

But I thini you can get a balcony room, without getting a suite. Rates for a balcony room look to be less than $300 per night:

There have been several posts on this forum about the Penn's balcony rooms. Most have not been positive. This is because nobody wants to sit outside when it is 95 degrees and 95% humidity. Also from inside, the view is not as good as some of the other types of rooms. I suggest you do what we did for next February and book a grand deluxe room. That will put you on a higher floor than a regular room at a lower price than a balcony room. The Terrace Suite sounds very nice but it is $1200 PER NIGHT - I would guess that the view would be pretty good for that price - not sure how much use you would get out of the outdoor jacuzzi though.

You definitely won't want to be on a balcony in June which is very very hot.

On the other hand June is way off season so you should be able to get very good rates especially if they know you are on your honeymoon. I agree with Craig that you should book a deluxe room and hope to be upgraded upon check in. In June I would think your chances of that would be huge especially since you are staying for four nights. But make sure they know it is your honeymoon.

I also think I have read that the Penn often offers an upgrade for a nominal rate upon check in.

Why would you want a balcony in Thai climate? What a waste.I've stayed at the Pen and paid about $145.(Aug 2004) for a standard room. A standard room is more than sufficient. Happy Travels!

I disagree I was upgraded to a balcony room on the 14th floor when I just paid for the regular room. However although it is very humid during daytime (when I'm out touring) I find it useful durng nighttime when it's cooler and I can get unobstructed view across the river of the Oriental and Shangri-La. It's just another option you can have

Your view may be unobstructed when you are out on the balcony, but I think if you are inside your view is obstructed.
So depending on how you like your view - inside vs. outside- you may want to skip the balcony room.

forget the balcony...its a waste...the room is probably nicer but you will get little use out of the balcony and in fact they take away from your unobstructed view of the city, river, etc from inside the room...think about it...there has to be a recess and a railing, etc...

grand deluxe is very nice and make sure you tell them in advance that it is your honeymoon and also mention it when you check in...

$1200 would be per nite....just look at their web site and you can easily see the prices....the suites are fabulous however...

I've used a balcony at the Oriental in the evening but during the cool season. Not sure I would in June.
