Old Phuket Hotel?
Looking for a property for 3 days in Phuket. Prefer Karon/Kata beaches. Something with some Thai character and the potential to walk to nearby shops. Does not need to be beach front, but perfer not to hike up a mountain to return to the hotel.
I had decided on Sawasdee Village, but it looks as if that will end up being more expensive than I had anticipated. Trying to keep the accommodations to under $100/night, and Old Phuket Hotel seems to meet my criteria. Anyone have any experience or know the neighborhood?

This is one of our favorites, what I call 'value for money'. It's not old, though now I guess it must be close on 5 years, but still modern. It is about 100 m back from the beach raod at karon 'on level ground'. The soi that runs down to the beach raod has restaurants and shops.
The rooms with jacuzzi are very good value. We were there ( although did not stay there ) about 10 days back and they have just built some amazing single floor private Jacuzzi rooms across the road. We had stopped for a drink and I was interested and the amaible staff showed us around, we knew the other rooms as have stayed often over the years. These have a small garden/yard jacuzzi, bedroom modern, huge bathroom area with great sized tub, plus semi open air shower at the back.
These are great rooms !
The swimming pool, not so large, is on the rooftop, but this actualy gives very nice views one way to the beach and the other way to the mountains.
Spa deluxe should be about USD 86 in November, normal twin USD 68, in my opinion the spa deluxe are 'better' than th terrace rooms which are much more! So there's a tip for you!
You are right to avoid these places up the hills, using 1st gear up a hill and then spotting one of these places, wow!!
Left and right from Old Phuket are other hotels, the Worabura is near. You walk across grassed area onto the beach so being able to get back to your hotel easily is good for 'bathroom use' etc.

It's a few minutes along to Karon Circle, shops and restaurants, about 15 mins into Patong.

we stayed at old phuket hotel last october,....nothing fancy but clean, on a quiet street one long block to the ocean and shops...
there was alot of rebuilding in the area..the shops were just recovering from the tsunami in october so it was very quiet and slow...
the hotel included a simple breakfast in our booking...the pool was small with little shade...but adequate.
james a recommended it and it was very suitable....easy taxi ride to anywhere,
restaurants are within walking distance
