Kata beach, Phuket - what can I expect?

Hi

My wife and I have gotten some cheap tickets to Thailand in November and we have decided to go to Phuket. We went there many years ago (as you can see from this early trip report http://gardkarlsen.com/thailand.htm ) but after that we have only checked out other places in Thailand. This time we have decided to stay at a place called Avista (http://www.avistaphuket.com/) located between Kata and Karon beach. We got it pretty cheap but I guess it can backfire as the place is due to open on November 1st and we are going there in mid-November ;-) - I hope that they are done with all the construction when we arrive there. I was also a bit surprised to see that the hotel offered the room for about 5000 Baht but when I check Agoda I could get the same room for 3000 Baht. So I sent an e-mail to the hotel that I would like to book directly if they could give me similar prices to Agoda. But they just sent me an e-mail back with the official price list with original prices so I just booked with Agoda and got the room for 3000 Baht including breakfast and taxes ;-)

But back to my question: what can I expect from Kata beach? Is it easy to get to the other beaches? How much is a taxi to Patong beach? Any good restaurants in Kata beach? Any info is appriciated

Regards
Gard

I'm not sure where your resort will be located as you say it is between Kata and Karon. Kata has restaurants, shopping, internet cafes, easy to walk. It will be relatively busy in November, I would imagine. Mom Tri's Boathouse Grill is one of the top restaurants on Phuket. Also, Mom Tri's Kitchen is really lovely. The Boathouse Grill is located AT the Boathouse resort, on the other end of Kata Beach from where you will be located. Highly recommended.

Mom Tri's Kitchen is located beyond the Boathouse, on a hillside between Kata and Kata Noi beaches. Highly recommend it for a lovely dinner!

Enjoy your trip!

If you're going to be in BKK on November 25, we're having a mini-GTG at Kinaree. It would be great to meet you after reading your posts for so many years.

Hi

The hotel seesms to be located around this place: http://www.wikimapia.org/#lat=7.8264...&search=phuket . Thanks for the feedback so far. We are not going to be in Bangkok on november 25th I'm afraid.

Looks like you will be up on the hillside overlooking Kata. Should be a nice location, but will probably require taxi or tuk tuk to get "down" to Kata Beach shopping/restaurants and activities area. Neat map. I found Mom Tri's Kitchen when I clicked on the area overlooking Kata Noi beach (from the wooded peninsula).

Your experience is the same as mine in getting hotel to match prices on agoda or sawasdee!

Enjoy your trip!

Hi Gard,

Your location will be fine. You are close to the Northern end of Club Med and there will be plenty of shops and restaraunts within walking distance. You are up on a hill so the walk back will be steep but it will be a good way to work off your meal. You can have desert without guilt!!

Your end of Kata will be relatively quiet on the beach as alot of the "Club-Medians" tend to stay in their complex rather than cross the road to the beach and as this resort talks up most of the beachfront on this side you will find plenty of space.

If you are after a good "cheap and cheerful" restaraunt, try Kata Mama. It is the opposite side of the bay from you, past the Kata Beach Resort, great views and fantastic value seafood and Thai.

Have fun, I'm jealous. It is the best part of Phuket IMHO.

Is Kata Mama part of Mom Tri's complex? I know they were opening a more casual beachside restaurant a year or so ago. If it is affiliated with Mom Tri's, it will be good, for sure.

Hi Carol,

It has been there for quite some time. It is local family owned and I dont believe it is afilliated with Mom Tri's. It is the plastic table sort of place, open air with a great view of the beach, virtually inches from the sand. It is right next door to a beach bar/cafe with a "rustifarian" feel which is the very last building on the southern end of Kata Yai.

Your location in Kata will be really good - it is indeed one of the best parts of Phuket. Plenty of shops, little restaurants, massage salons etc. and you really dont need to venture into very busy Patong if you dont want too. Try Natalies for great thai and seafood opposite Kata Beach Resort, fab food! You can choose your own fresh fish and they will cook it for you, and very reasonably priced. Also across from Natalie's is Mali, extensive thai menu and food is very good.
We also ate frequently right at the far end of Kata Beach at small restaurant on the beach with plastic tables and bright tablecloths - it was the middle one of three there - sorry cant quite remember the name of it - but it was usually very busy, but the thai food was absolutely devine and very cheap!
Also fun to try Dino's which is more near Karon in a little village. The front has a rock facade and there is mini-putt there and lots of interesting little bridges and water features. Good menu.
There is lots of choice at Kata, its a great beach and I am sure you will enjoy it - have a great holiday!

Hi and greetings from Avista. I have uploaded this video to YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MauwtROdQMg . It should give an impression of the hotel. I will come back later on with a review.

Thanks gard. I am in the midst of finalizing a trip to Phuket in December and would love to hear your impressions on this hotel. Is it good for Honeymooners in your opinion?

Thanks.

Hi

I guess it depends what you are looking for in a honeymoon. I like the fact that it was easy to get from the hotel to Kata beach and Karon beach if you need to find some restaurants and shops. If you want to stay more secluded there are lots of other options. But here is my review of the hotel http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserR...ta_Phuket.html
