with only 3 days in bkk, it seems senseless to leave for one day....besides i am not sure what you think you will see/do with a one day trip to HH and for that matter to samet either....the ride is boring and there is not much to see....by the time you go to either you will only have 10 minutes on the beach once you arrive...

i suggest that you spend that day in bkk...

I agree, road travel is not much fun in Thailand, both highways from BKK (to HH or to Rayong) are thick with traffic and have very little of interest to see on the way. And for daytrips you'll have a very short time at either destination then it will be time to get back into the stinking traffic to return. If I had 3 days in BKK I'd spend them looking around BKK temples & historical sites; travelling on the ChaoPhyra River ferries; looking around BKK shopping centres; going to a spa/massage/beauty salon to be pampered for an afternoon.
However, if you really want to get out of BKK for a day and spend some time at a beach then consider either Pattaya or Bangsaen, both places are only about 2 hours from BKK by bus.

I agree day trips can be several hours each way ( much more to Samet ) so most of the day is takren up with travel, if you take an early start Kanchanaburi can be interesting for a day trip.
