BKK-Need a tailor for an evening gown

I was in Thailand over Christmas and as you can imagine I did not get the dress made that I had wanted to and now I have onemonth before my ball. Am in Tokyo and can fly anywhere in Asia to have a gown made but only have a few ideas? Any recommendations?

Thanks

Go to Cotton House in Oriental Place (near the Oriental Hotel) in Bangkok. They do wonderful work and I have seen incredible evening gowns done by them. If you want to make sure it is perfect and exactly what you want I would give them 5-7 days although they will certainly do it in less time if you want. Many embassy women get their gowns done by Cotton House. Aside from doing superb work, they are lovely women and not at all hard sell. Tell them Gloria Friedman sent you. I've been using them since they opened and have never been anything but very happy.

I think Jim Thompson is way over priced for tailoring. Fabrics are great, however. Also, the tailors there don't seem as creative in terms of style -- a lot of what they "create" is a bit dowdy. Now they do have the Naga (I think that's the name) line these days which is spectacular but that's ready wear.

I agree that Bangkok is the place to go. Tailoring and fabrics are less expensive than Hong Kong. Gloria's suggestion of Cotton House is a very good one. In the distant past, I used a place called "Choisy." At the time, it was across the street from the main Jim Thompson store. I know it moved, but I don't know if it is still in business. It was a French woman who ran the place, she was a designer and did fabulous things. Anyone know?

A friend of mine lives in Bangkok and always gets things made at Queen Thai Silk 199 Sukhumvit Rd, near Soi 15.

Their European friends always get copies of the latest European trends there. I also had a fantastic emerald green striped silk jacket made within 48 hours. After final fitting they will deliver to your hotel. I'll be back there again in 2 weeks.

Say I sent you ..Rhonda Preece
