beach sand for science fair

Message: My 3rd grade daughter is doing a science fair project on beach sands of the world. If anyone out there would be willing to send a sample of beach sand from an asian beach we would be so grateful.

Does anyone have a contact name of a hotel person or a person living on the beach that we could maybe mail an addressed envelope with a collection bag to? This is a strange request but you never know who might be out there and willing to help. Please let us know...We also asked the folks that check the other region boards.

The JW Marriott hotel in Phuket Thailand is adjacent to a turtle research center and sponsors studies at the center. They may be willing to send you some sand as part of their PR efforts in connection with the center. You could contact

Director of Public Relations
JW Marriott Phuket Resort and Spa
Phuket,Thailand
Tel: 66 76 338 000
Fax: 66 76 348 348

I would suggest you send a fax to hotel about your request, addressed to the director of PR. (You could call the hotel and find out the name of the director of PR.) Indicate that you would be willing to pay for FedEx or other shipping, or better yet, tell them you will send them a Fed Ex/DHL containing a pre-addressed, pre-paid return Fed Ex/DHL envelope and a plastic container for the sand. (In other words, make this as easy as possible for them.)

You could try this at other coastal hotels in the parts of the world you are interested in.

i have the envelopes...my neighbor had them...they came on saturday...

the sand is drying as some of it i got from waters edge...it should be dry by wednesday or maybe even tomorrow...

the sand is from 3 places:

nahant, a small town just north of boston...from a very small beach which looks westward toward downtown boston across the water....you can see the skyline....

next is from the town beach at north hampton, new hampshire, open ocean...next stop england...

lastly from a lovely cove facing out to the open ocean at york harbour, maine...its called the harbour beach..

i will put all this in the packet and mark each one...

Thanks! Sorry I have not checked Fodors for a couple of days. We really appreciate your help. It has been very exciting, we have already received 5 samples! This has been a great example of the goodness of people. We have been touched that so many people have been willing to help a stranger. It makes my daughter so excited when the sand comes in the mail. She is going to have a great experiment. We will let you know when your arrives. Thanks again!

The science fair is March 11 and it is looking only at Beach Sands of the World. Let me know if you have access to beach sands. Thanks for your inquiry.
