Hi everybody.
During our 5 day stay in Bangkok in may we plan to visit the following restaurants :
Baan Khanitha (lunch)
Face bar (lunch)
Liu at Hotel Conrad (lunch)
China house at Oriental (dinner)
Samboon seafood (dinner)
Tongue Thai (dinnner)
Basil Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit (dinner)
Brunch at Madison Four Seasons

Have anybody visited any of these restaurants recently and are they still as good as everybody on this forum says????

We had dinner at both Tongue Thai and China House in late February. We had the excellent Peking Duck at China House and wonderful chicken and cashews at Tongue Thai.

baan khanitha has a new location, additional location on sathorn....guen reported it i think....

the one on ruan rudee is now closed, thank god---terrible place...

the soi 23, sukhumvit location is in an attractive house


most of the other places were still excellent as of june, '05.....the dim sum at liu is to die for....all you can eat and select from a menu for a fixed price....

not sure the face bar is open for lunch but the thai restaurant there is.. quite honestly to get the full effect of face its best to go at nite but maybe you do not have the time

We has lunch at Lana Thai (at Face) in November. The food was excellent. HawaiianTraveler recently reported that had good food there 3 times duing their trip. Actually, HT reported on a number of the restaurants you ask about. Look at his trip report.

Baan Kanitha - consistently good
Face - been to the Indian side in the evening - really very good. I think I agree that going in the evening is better.
China House - been for dim sum which is excellent, and for Peking Duck - also very good.
Somboon - it's my favourite in Bangkok - it's not fancy though, and the service isn't great - but the food (crab curry, sea bass etc.) is excellent.

can anyone tell us more about somboon?? i see a short frommer's review but it does not say much....

Somboons is more Thai-Chinese seafood than Thai-thai (if you see what I mean!) I find it a very reasonably priced restaurant, busy, great seafood. My blog review can be seen here - though really, I should have got a better pic of the crab curry.

If you type in "Siam Ocean World" in the "Search" section, then you'll find my Bangkok trip report and I report on some of the restaurants on your list. Baan Kanitha I haven't eaten at, but there's a new one in the Sarhorn area. I've seen it and mentioned in my trip report. Go to that one. It's in a house kind of setting. I was on vacation,in Bangkok, for three weeks, Dec 2005-Jan 2006. I ate at Face this past trip and have reported on it. It was ok, but not the best Thai food I've had. There were some mixed reviews on it...also from expats in Bangkok. The BEST "gourmet level" Thai food I've experienced in Bangkok was hands down at Basil.It's all written in my trip report. They also have a cooking class. It's NOT a huge group of people, but the chef does a one-on-one type of cooking course. I've reported extensively on the cooking class in my trip report. As for brunch at the Four Seasons, well, haven't had the brunch, but the Four Seasons is my home-away-from-home hotel in Bangkok and I eat the buffet breakfast whenever I'm there and as far as I'm concerned it's the best buffet breakfast I've had in Bangkok of any of the many hotels I've stayed at including the Oriental and Pen. And trust me,I've stayed at a lot of hotels in Bangkok. So, I would definitely try the brunch if I were you. Plus, the restaurant is located in the tropical atrium with a mini shopping arcade that is very nice. There's a branch of the NeOld boutique(Southeast Asian antiques and home furnishings in that atrium) and there's a deli and usually an art exhibit on Southeast Asian photography of which one can purchase the photos. Also, the lobby of the Four Seasons is so beautiful, until it's worth a trip just for that. Hope this has helped. Happy Travels!

we had the best indian meal we've ever had, by far, at rang mahal in the rembrandt hotel. the best meal we had in bangkokj, which is saying something.

my problem with the atrium at four seasons is that it is almost raining in there as the humidity is so high and it is even hotter than outside on the street....i find it very uncomfortable to even walk from one shop to another...i could never eat there...

I haven't had that problem with the atrium. Maybe I'm just used to heat. Happy Travels!
