United's terminal at Washington-Dulles Airport - Ick!

I visited that terminal for the first time last weekend - what a hellhole! Low ceilings, poor maintenance, awful concessions, narrow Third World concourse with people tripping over each other....
Washington-area flyers, my sympathies! If that's you're intro to the United States, you'd be inclined to get back on the plane and go home.

That should read "if that's your intro to the United States..." for grammar purists.

Yep, I couldn't agree more. Dulles is not one of the country's nicer airports. Just flew through there day before yesterday (for about my 5th time) and THIS TIME I SWEAR it was my LAST time. Hope I can stick to that decision!! lol

The good thing about the airport is the use of large "people movers" instead of buses out to the planes. It sure beats the European airports in that regard.

Yeah, those mobile lounge people movers are fun in a Jetsons kind of way (meaning they probably looked advanced in the 1950s), but some of them can be terribly infrequent.

Dulles was nice to use 20+ years ago when the mobile lounges took you between the main building and the aircraft doors. No ramps, stairs or jetways, just the shuttle.

Then the midfield terminals came and ... eventually ... there were more flights to more places at lower fares.

I spent 4 horrible hours in Dulles with my dtr after Florida trip last February. You forgot the part about there being no food - under best of circumstances food options are limited, but when the Burger King ran out of fries for the day at 11:30 AM I knew things were going to get scary.

The mobile lounges ("moon buggies" to us locals) are on the way out, to be replaced with an aerotram/train in 2009. I'll miss those!

(Thanks for your sympathies, btw)

Poor Marty, and he tripped all the way to the Starbucks.
