Our neighbors, flying to Egypt with a lot of luggage for a summer stay, used brightly patterned duct tape in a big strip on either side of the suitcases.

Take a cell phone photo of your marked/tagged/ribboned luggage before you leave. Then if you do have a problem with lost luggage, you can show a photo to identify it.
