Incredible site for flight status/route junkies
I only learned about this site 2 days ago, and am just finding out how powerful and thorough the information it is.
www.flightaware.com
Its "live tracking" features are the most comprehensive (at least for flights within the US or to/from the US). You can search by flight number, airport, type of aircraft, etc; and it displays current flight, and even departure/arrival data for the last 7 days.
Like other tracking sites, it displays a live chart (only over US/Canada only), ground speed and altitude.
One shortcoming is that it doesn't use IATA code for foreign airports, only ICAO. So, if you want to search for all current flights between US and Hong Kong, you have to use VHHH instead of HKG.
But anyways, playing with it for some time tonite on some international flights enroute from US to Asia/Europe, I found that:
- UA829 is making a lengthy unscheduled stop at Anchorage for its supposedly non-stop ORD-HKG run.
- Of the three Cathay Pacific LAX-HKG "non-stop", CX885 has been making fuel stops at TPE for the last two days, CX883 is stopping at ICN today, while CX881 is doing it non-stop. All 744. Go figure.
- SQ21 EWR-SIN is taking the Polar Route tonight, flying straight north; while TG791 JFK-BKK that left earlier today flew NE over the N. Atlantic.
The site is in Beta, so there are bugs. Mostly with timing on international flights. But still, lots of stuff for the junkies to look at.

AAFF - Yes, you're right about cargo.
BTW, free registration and you get flight information for up to the previous 90 days. Easy tool to find out if the flight you've booked has been chronically late or not.

I looked at the CX883 that went to ICN. flightaware.com has position, ground speed, altitude for about the first 5 hours of the flight. For a long time its groundspeed was <400mph, and it never exceeded 480 during those times.
That's what a West Coast-Asia plane has to encounter. Strong headwinds.

been using www.flightaware.com for a couple of mo and just love it!
I especially like the airport feature - lets you figure out what realtime delays at ORD, LGA, etc are.
