Flying Japan Airlines - Evaluations

We are scheduled to fly Japan Airlines from LA to Thailand.

We have never flown JAL before but have flown on many of the Star Alliance members.

How do Fodorites evaluate it.

Thanks.

Ed...Did you post on the Asia board? Failing that, go to flyertalk..you'll get answers, but there's a trillion times more info there than here.Good Luck!

I flew Japan Airlines last May/June, first class between JFK and Narita and business class between Narita and Bali. Food and service were excellent. The Skysleeper Solo seat left something to be desired, IMO. I posted a rambling eval of it in the post titled: First Class on Singapore/Cathay or JAL?". The business class flights were excellent all-around and compare favorably with Thai Airways' first class.

Of course, JAL is not a *Alliance member.

I have only flown them in Coach/Economy and found them fine. Not up to SQ standards but quite ok. I agree you should copy the post to the Asia section where you will get more answers probably.

Flew business class to Australia via Tokyo on JAL last spring. Generally a good airline. The staff were courteous, the seats were the standard b. class seats, not the new sleeper type that is now being implemented on many airlines. The food was fine altho I was surprised that they did not give out the little cases that carry all the toiletries etc. like in the past, at least not on our flights. They just came around with a basket that had toothbrushes in them for people to take and eye covers for those that wanted them.

I had forgotten the toiletries.
They did come around after each meal with a toothbrush and dental creme.

And nice warm moist towels every three hours or so, a very nice touch
