Jo'Burg Airport Hotel

I, unfortunately, cannot make flight arrangements work out to fly from Hoedspruit to Jo'Burg and Jo'Burg to Kasane that will worth without me having to stay overnight in Jo'Burg. What hotel at the airport would you recommend?

FYI: Staying at Honeyguide in the Manyeleti and then Garden Lodge in Kasane. Timing just doesn't work without an overnight in Jo'Burg.

I stayed one night at the Southern Sun OR Tambo - right near the airport. It was fine - wine and cheese afternoon reception, nice room, nice buffet breakfast in the morning. Less than 5 min ride to and from airport.

The International Hotel is just across the street from JNB, 3 minute walk. It is 5 star in quality and cost.

The SS OR Tambo is very nice, and you catch the schuttle to it at a schuttle stop area next to the International. A bit $$$.

That same shuttle stop will take you to the Emperors Palace Complex Hotels, a 10 min ride. http://www.emperorspalace.co.za/peer.../emperors-home

The City Lodge OR Tambo they claim is "inside" the airport/JNB, but is actually over one of the parking lots and is a further walk than to the International. Assuming you can figure out how to get to it. Signage for it did not exist in 2012. Rooms are like a Motel 6 here in USA.

There are also private B&B nearby at reasonable $$ and will pick you up at JNB.

I have stayed at all of the above when arriving JNB first night. Even if arriving (from California) in the early morning. After 32 hours from my house front door I am very ready to collapse in a bed. (After 9 hours in a plane I'm afraid I'm going to die. After 10 hours I wish I would). That overnight also gives a chance for lost luggage to arrive (happened once). Next morning, off to safari camp.

regards - tom
ps- my last trip to JNB on BA caused me to "over dose" on flying". I don't need to fly. That was my last flight anywhere unless family emergency.

I think Tom means the InterContinental Hotel is right across the street. Its not even really a street -- its an access road at the airport. We stayed there in November for one night. It was wonderful. They have a free meet and greet on offer. A lovely gentleman from the hotel met us in baggage control and walked us to the hotel even though it was quite easy to do. He handled our luggage and even brought an umbrella for the few tiny raindrops along the sidewalk. The next morning he walked us back to make sure we were in the right place for departure.

The room was wonderfully comfortable with a deep soaking tub. There is a lovely indoor pool that overlooks the airport. A swim felt wonderful after such a long flight. There is also a highly regarded spa. The restaurant food was very good. Excellent staff. I would highly recommend this hotel.

BTW: we stayed at the IC on points. It required the minimum amount.

Yep, thanks TC, is the InterContinental. It would easily be my first choice if $$$$ no worry.

I know, Tom. For us, it was "free". The best price!

Cheers!

The OR Tambo is well signposted from the airport and at $122 AUD per night including breakfast is great value.

My husband and I stayed at CityLodge OR Tambo for one night last year. Super convenient, easy to find, friendly staff, nice room, good buffet breakfast.

Just stayed at the CityLodge OR Tambo on top of the parking deck last weekend. I would highly recommend. You can bid for lower price on weekend nights at bid2stay.co.za (No prepayment and can cancel. We paid ~$US95 for one night and could get night before we left at $80, but we stayed in the city.).

When you exit international arrivals, there are overhead signs that direct you to go straight down the escalator, then back up to reach the CityLodge. It is easier to go up lift to P2 and walk directly into the garage and follow the signs on that floor to the brown elevator that leads to the hotel. You can even push a luggage cart all the way to the hotel elevator.

I asked for quiet room and was given one facing the interior courtyard and roofs. It was a small room, but nicely furnished with comfortable bed, desk, coffee/tea maker, windows that open, bath with shower and tub (fan runs continually). One hour free internet. Will print boarding passes at front desk.

Light meals in restaurant ~US$7. Continental breakfast buffet $10 and full English buffet $15.

We just stayed at the Garden Court OR Tambo. It's a Southern Sun property, just a tad less expensive. Nice, with an excellent breakfast (included). Join the member club for free wifi and better rate. We had dinner at the Irish Pub attached to the hotel - it's a hoot!! I'd recommend, but also like the Southern Sun if you get a good price.
