Great Migration Tanzania When?
Friends of ours have done one safari and are hooked. They would like to go to Tanzania during the Great Migration. They always thought August/September was a good time and wonders of wonders can get two free airline tickets with miles. However, other friends believe the best time to visit Tanzania is in january/February. This is a really big trip for them and they worry about getting it wrong. Thanks for any advice.

Hi, it moves around. There are a few sites that show where the migration might be at certain times of the year.

Hi gladtotravel,
Well tanzania is best in jan/feb as the wildies are in the short grass plains and they calve, so it is a feast for the predators.
Also the migration update can be seen at atta.co.uk on the right hand side on nomad tanzania link, ndutu lodge has a newsletter, which can be seen on thier site also www.wildwatch.com of cc africa has got good news about the migration.
Best of luck, Sonali

In August/September, I think you'll find that most of the Migration will be in Kenya's Masai Mara, although there are usually a few herds that remain in the northern Serengeti. June is a good time for seeing the Migration in the central Serengeti. It's cooler than February, too. If you've got your tix already, though, don't let it deter you. You could always split your safari between Kenya and Tanzania.

Hi
Calving usually (~) starts at the middle of Feb, so during this time till the beginning of March is a very good time in Ndutu
Densest concentrations to be seen are in central Serengeti during April-May (it's a well kept secret...)
from June onwards you better stay at northern Serengeti

I lived in Tanzania & managed Ndutu Lodge (YEARS ago). It is the place to be from Jan - March. Where the migration is depends on the rain. The high calcium content of the grass on the short grass plains makes it the place to raise calves. Wherever the Gnus are on the short grass plains, they should be reachable from Ndutu. Also easy to visit Olduvai and Seronera and probably even the Ngorongoro Crater (not sure of regulations & times these days - we could do so in my day). Do check the Ndutu web site. They have a page that has a bookings chart - a number of days already fully booked for this year.
