Another Mummy Tummy Question

Checked in with all the precautions for GI infections while in Egypt.
We are going on the Viking Cruise in Nov. IOur friends are bringing Z-Pak and Imodium which I plan on bringing also. My concern is that I am on Protonix which is a PPI (acid reducer) for acid relfux. I read somewhere that taking antacids is not a good idea because stomach acid is the first line of defense against intestinal infections.

I can't stop taking the meds for 2 weeks so if anyone has any comments on this problem please share them. I also heard that taking Probiotics is helpful as they add several strains of good bacteria that line the gut and this would help with fending off invading bacs.

A lot of us on Fodors answered this question last year.

Did you read that posting ?

If not here is the link.

Your risk is not that high for geting a bacteria infection in Egypt.

You can buy AntiNal over the counter almost anywhere in Egypt.
This is a "poor man's antibiotic", it's mode of action is not that great BUT ,for what gives you a intestinal upset in Egypt ,this is all you might need.

Save the Z-PAk if you really get sick ,not just an upset stomach and a bit of a loose bowel movement.

Plus diarrhea is a symptom and not a disease..so there are other non-infection causes of the diarrhea , while in Egypt.

You are taking Imodium and the Z-Pak ( I prefer Cipro for Egypt , Z-Pak is better for Asia)..but that is okay, use the Z- Pak.

I do not think I would start adding Probiotics, they will not make that much of a difference , BUT if you are comfortable taking them ,then ok.

I would take some Lozengers with you ( for a cold or a non-infectious sore throat, as there is always an air-conditioner blowing somewhere.), it is simple to keep a roll in your purse.

Percy is a real Doctor - listen to him. He's not just blowing smoke!

Well said Percy! I liked the part best about "diarrhea is a symptom and not a disease". So many people don't look at it that way.

Also maybe you've heard by now, but we handled the Pratt group with ease and I think they are happy! It was a good tour for them.
