Although crowded Route 28 is more commercial than serene, it's also home to several value-packed hotels. The Mariner is a good family lodging and a bargain. Although the rooms are standard-issue motel—think basic furnishings such as floral bedcovers and carpets that can take a direct hit from a spilled soft drink—the outdoor pool is heated and large, and a heated indoor pool, with an oversize whirlpool hot tub, is great for rainy days. Also on-site are a miniature-golf course and vending machines for snacks. Kids stay free, and weekday rates are reduced. Pros: Ideal for those traveling with children, great golf packages, reasonable rates, close to attractions and restaurants. Cons: Not for a quiet retreat, no beachfront or water views.
