Lighthouse Inn
At a Glance
- Good beachfront location, tons of activities for those traveling with children
Pros
- Not for those seeking quiet, intimate lodging (lots of kids about)
Cons
Lighthouse Inn Review
On a small private beach adjacent to West Dennis Beach, this venerable Cape resort has been in family hands since 1938. The main inn was built around a still-operational 1855 lighthouse. Along a landscaped lawn are 23 individual one- to three-bedroom cottages made entirely of shingles and five larger buildings with multiple guest rooms. Cottages have decks, fireplaces, two double (or one double and one king-size) beds, and sitting areas (but no kitchens). In the main inn are five guest rooms, a living room, a library, and a waterfront restaurant serving New England fare. In summer, supervised kids' activities give parents some private time.

The price was extremely high for the accommodations received. Could easily find equal or better accommodations for half the price. The food was not good. If you can get a rate that does not include food you would be wise to do this. The location is great with outstanding views of the ocean but not worth the price.

Boy did this bring me back to the days of the Dirty Dancing Movie. The cabins, many so small it was hard to imagine a family staying there, were adequate for what we were expecting. A big plus was that many of them had air conditioning which was very helpful in the 90 degree heat. The beach, what there was of it, was very small and LOADED with sea weed. We found that if we snuck over the jetty and hung out on one of the private beaches without getting notice4d, it was much better. The public beach was about a 5 minute walk also. The dining room on most nightw was so hot we couldnt wait to get out of there. Ceiling fans were not put on and the slight breeze that you had from the open windows was small and smelly. We did eat outside one night, but the overwhelming stench from the drainined swimming area that was left almost empty by the tide was unbearable. I understand that sea weed and marsh smell, but when you are paying top dollar to stay there and for food, it was unacceptable. One morning we were so sick from the food the night before, we spent more time in the bathroom than on the beach. The breakfast buffet was good, but you had a very small window of opportunity to use it. It was opened from 8-9:30 am only. You Snooze You Lose, and we did most mornings. All in all, I would give it a 6 out of 10. Quaint to look at and perhaps a nice place for a wedding in the late summer or early fall, but I would not go back. Watch the dining room and the cabins in the movie dirty dancing and that is pretty much what you will get. Nice for a day or two, but not a week.

Great location with a nice little beach within walking distance to the public beach. The pool area is OK, but like the grounds, needs work. The mini golf course/putting green was a mess. The breakfast buffet, included with the room price, was very good. Unfortunately the hours were way too early and way too short. Lunch on the water view deck should have been lovely, but the food was not very good and overpriced. We had burned hamburger buns and little bags of potato chips. The cabins are run down and poorly set up, lacking in quality furnishings and nice decor. The staff was helpful, polite and prompt in servicing problems with the door key, room safe and lack of glasses (two in a two bedroom cabin). Some of the bathrooms are better than others. One of ours was not. It was small, not very nice, rusty and worn, with a tub that did not drain well. We made reservations for three rooms, then had to cancel one of the rooms less than 24 hours after making the reservation. They charged us the full deposit fee and did not offer any minor comp. We asked for early check-in and late check-out, but they only extended our room for 1 hour. They didn't even offer us a free drink while we were waiting for our room to be prepared. It gets a 2 for value because it is substantially less expensive than the nicer resorts -- under $300 compared to over $500. We might stay here again, but at least we know what we will be getting. This would be a good spot for messy families and fraternity reunions if you're OK with food that is lacking and way over priced.
