Roads and bicycle trails lead to Coast Guard and Nauset Light beaches, which begin an unbroken 30-mi stretch of barrier beach extending to Provincetown—the "Cape Cod Beach" of Thoreau's 1865 classic, Cape Cod. You can still walk its length, as Thoreau did, though the Atlantic continues to claim more of the Cape's eastern shore every year. The site of the famous beach cottage of Henry Beston's 1928 book, The Outermost House, is to the south, near the end of Nauset spit. Designated as a literary landmark in 1964, the cottage was, alas, destroyed in the Great Blizzard of February 1978.
