Fort de Matra Review

On a pine-studded plateau is the carefully restored 14th-century Fort de Matra, an imposing double cube-shaped stone structure, which houses the Musée Jérôme Carcopino —the name of the Corsican historian who is responsible for the excavations at the ancient site of Aleria. On display are pottery and tools found on the site, as well as Etruscan, Greek, and Roman artifacts dating from as far back as 500 BC. The fort itself was built by the Genoese to house calvary as they surveyed their passage on the plains to Corte. It repelled an attack during the Corsican revolt, welcoming only the king and the Matra family once fighting subsided.
