Artnouveau City II

$$$ | 49 Seocho--daero 74--gil, Seoul, 06626, South Korea

Technically a serviced apartment, Artnoveau City makes a comfortable and useful base for those visiting for longer periods of time. As the name implies, the relatively spacious rooms have a consistent art nouveau design theme. While not as elegant as the top-level luxury hotels, Artnouveau feels like a classy city apartment. Even the standard rooms have a kitchenette and separate living and bedroom areas, making it a good choice for visitors who want to entertain guests. The difficult part is getting guests to stop by after dinner since Artnouveau is at best a short cab ride from even the nearest nightlife area.

Banyan Tree Club And Spa

Gongsimga Hanok Guesthouse

$$ | 46 Yulgok-ro 1-gil, Seoul, South Korea

Conveniently located in the Insa-dong neighborhood, Gongsimga Hanok Guesthouse is a four-bedroom accommodation in a traditional Korean setting. While each room comes with a Western-style toilet in the bathroom, there are Korean-style futons instead of conventional mattress-type beds, which should be noted for those unaccustomed to sleeping on the floor. The facilities are run by a friendly older couple and welcomes families, including children of all ages. However, for those looking for a bit more quiet, there is little insulation to block out noise among other guests. The main attraction is the sunny courtyard in the center where an American-style breakfast is served in the morning. The prices are very reasonable for a hanok stay of this stature.

Pros

Hamilton Hotel

$$ | Itaewon-ro, Seoul, South Korea

This reliable hotel in front of Itaewon Station is perfect for visitors looking for easy access to Western comforts and for those who prefer to be close to Itaewon nightlife. While the general hotel decor is lacking and the rooms are modest, the hotel has been neatly-kept and well-maintained since its renovation in 2017. The facilities include a sauna and an outdoor pool. During the summers, the pool is a popular spot for day-drinking and parties. Note that the rooms are soundproof but the large crowds of partygoers nearby do make noise that's hard to muffle out entirely, especially if you’re visiting during nice weather and want to keep your windows open. Catching a cab between midnight and 5 am in this area is extremely difficult, so the hotel's location near nightlife options makes it ideal.

The hotel is also connected to AK Plaza, a small, five-story department store with several clothing boutiques, stationery shops, and restaurants. Ibis Ambassador Seoul Myeong-dong

An excellent value for both business and sightseeing, the Ibis Ambassador is a reliable hotel choice in this location. While the rooms won't win any design awards, they are pleasant and comfortable, and the staff is quite warm and helpful. The hotel's real selling point, however, is its location in the center of Seoul's downtown shopping area, also a short taxi or subway ride from museums and Seoul's historic neighborhoods. For guests who just want a place to sleep, the standard rooms are fine, but if you want to spend some time relaxing in the hotel it is worth upgrading to a slightly larger room. Imperial Palace Seoul

$$$ | 640 Eonju--ro, Seoul, 06098, South Korea

For a decidedly Korean take on a lavish European hotel, look no further than the Imperial Palace. The lobby looks a little like an extravagant version of a Venetian palace, but it comes across as nostalgic and charming (albeit with a touch of unintended kitsch). The rooms feel a bit dated, but are often adorned with furnishings and art that the manager found on overseas travels. There isn't much of interest in the immediate vicinity, but the main shopping and nightlife of Gangnam is a short taxi away. On the plus side, the service is excellent. While not for everyone, the Imperial Palace can make for a very interesting stay.

Pros

  • Great service
