25 Best Hotels in Seoul, South Korea

Background Illustration for Hotels

Although accommodation is similar to that in any other major world city, Seoul offers a few unique options: Motels (aka love hotels), many of which have very nice rooms; traditional wooden Hanok Houses where guests can experience Korean culture; and Buddhist Temple Stays.

Grand Mercure Ambassador Hotel and Residences Yongsan

$$$ | 95 Cheongpa-ro 20-gil, Seoul, South Korea Fodor's Choice

Located near Yongsan Station, the Grand Mercure is the luxury option of the hotels at Seoul Dragon City, an accommodations complex (or hotelplex) made up of three hotel brands at four different price points. Although it can be a bit overwhelming to figure out which elevator to use to access which facility, some may find it convenient to have so many different options in one place. Of these, the Grand Mercure is notable in that all of their rooms are pet-friendly and offer a small kitchenette. The hotel has a spa, sauna, and indoor swimming pool. Unlike many pools in the city, the indoor swimming pool is free for hotel guests.

Pros

  • Pool is free with a stay
  • Pet-friendly
  • Spa on-site

Cons

  • Kitchenette is limited
  • Hotelplex system can be confusing for some
  • Area feels closed in by other hotels

Mondrian Seoul Itaewon

$$$ | 23 Jangmun-ro, Seoul, South Korea Fodor's Choice

A major overhaul of the well-known Capital Hotel resulted in this boldly designed Mondrian in 2020, and along with it posh facilities like a rooftop pool, Mediterranean restaurant, and bar. The reconstruction was done by Gansam Architects & Associates, an architectural group known for their creativity in projects like the Suncheon International Wetlands Center and the Jeju Provincial Art Museum. While the rooms here are a bit smaller than the average, the vibrant colors and posh in-house facilities make the hotel a worthwhile visit. Among the hotel’s facilities are two hotels (indoors and outdoors), a rooftop bar, and several boutique stores. Note that the overall design is impressive but there have been complaints about customer service issues in the hotel’s opening months.

Pros

  • Posh retail stores on-site
  • Renowned rooftop pool
  • Trendy design

Cons

  • Design can be overwhelming
  • Service can be hit or miss
  • Rooms are smaller than average

The Plaza Seoul, Autograph Collection

$$$ | 119 Sogong-ro, Seoul, 04525, South Korea Fodor's Choice

Downtown Seoul's most strikingly unique luxury hotel offers all the comforts of a Marriott without sacrificing its local identity, plus a spa, fitness center, and six restaurants and bars. Planned by famous Italian designer Guido Ciompi, at first glance the Plaza appears almost too contemporary until one notices the incorporation of traditional Korean elements and patterns. Each type of guest room has a different style, though all combine clever design ideas, a rich color scheme, and ultramodern design. Service is unobtrusive but courteous and efficient. As with most hotels downtown, the standard rooms are a bit small, but the aesthetics and use of space are impressive.

Pros

  • Great view of Seoul City Hall
  • Center of downtown
  • Contemporary design

Cons

  • Mixed design concept may be jarring for some
  • Expensive
  • Rooms are smaller than some less-central luxury hotels

Rakkojae Seoul

$$$ | 49–23 Gyedong-gil, Seoul, 03056, South Korea Fodor's Choice

The finest of all of Seoul's traditional hanok lodgings, everything at Rakkojae—from the master bedroom's heated jade floors to the elegant Korean-course meals—is orchestrated to help guests better experience and understand Korean tradition. Built entirely with the same traditional techniques used in temples, and renovated by a craftsman who is also a national treasure, staying at Rakkojae gives the impression of visiting the home of a Joseon-era aristocrat. The quiet, traditional hanok residences of Bukchon add to the feeling of being transported back in time. Rakkojae also offers guests the opportunity to experience a tea ceremony, Korean earthen sauna, or (for an extra fee) a traditional Korean performance.

Pros

  • Elegant traditional experience
  • Beautiful surroundings
  • Located in Seoul's most historic district

Cons

  • Costs more than average for the area
  • Bedding is traditional Korean futons

RYSE, Autograph Collection

$$$ | 130 Yanghwa-ro, Seoul, South Korea Fodor's Choice

This Marriott Autograph Collection hotel, which opened in 2018, is an ideal place for creative types to meet like-minded people at some of the area's sleekest bars and restaurants and less so for groups looking to relax. Their 272 rooms offer a vibrant, colorful aesthetic and are named after their target clientele: the creator room, the editor room, the producer suite, and the director suite. There's a Blue Bottle Coffee on the first floor, a cocktail bar called the Side Note Club, and a library of art magazines on the third floor. Since many of the hotel’s facilities are open to outside guests, it can get quite crowded—especially if there is an event—and some have complained of noise, even in the upper floors.

Pros

  • Vibrant, colorful aesthetic
  • Great for creatives
  • Well-reputed bars and restaurants on-site

Cons

  • Can be loud, even on the upper floors
  • Atmosphere is energetic, not relaxing
  • Public facilities can get crowded

Artnouveau City II

$$$ | 49 Seocho--daero 74--gil, Seoul, 06626, South Korea

Technically a serviced apartment, Artnoveau City makes a comfortable and useful base for those visiting for longer periods of time. As the name implies, the relatively spacious rooms have a consistent art nouveau design theme. While not as elegant as the top-level luxury hotels, Artnouveau feels like a classy city apartment. Even the standard rooms have a kitchenette and separate living and bedroom areas, making it a good choice for visitors who want to entertain guests. The difficult part is getting guests to stop by after dinner since Artnouveau is at best a short cab ride from even the nearest nightlife area.

Pros

  • Apartment-style rooms convenient for longer stays
  • Good for entertaining

Four Seasons Hotel Seoul

$$$ | 97 Saemunan-ro, Seoul, South Korea

One of the most luxurious accommodations in Seoul, this location of the Four Seasons boasts several well-reputed restaurants and a state-of-the-art spa in addition to spotless, sunny guest rooms that have panoramic city views. Located in the heart of the city only a few steps away from Gwanghwamun Station, the hotel is both easy to access and quiet at night (since many nearby attractions close early on in the evening). Spend an afternoon at the Korean sauna within the spa and grab a bite at The Market Kitchen, an international buffet and marketplace where items can be bought a la carte. Yu Yuan, a high-end Cantonese restaurant, serves one of the best Peking ducks in the country and drinks at Charles H., the world-class speakeasy in the basement, is also a must.

Pros

  • Top-notch Korean sauna
  • Great in-house restaurants and bars
  • Central location

Grand Hyatt Seoul

$$$ | 322 Sowol-ro, Seoul, South Korea

A 5-star hotel with an established reputation, Grand Hyatt Seoul is on the Itaewon side of Namsan mountain and has spectacular views of either N Seoul Tower or the Han River. With rooms starting at 322 square feet, even the smallest rooms are larger than most in the city. The facilities include an outdoor swimming pool which transforms to an ice-skating rink in the winter, several notable restaurants, and a well-reputed spa. While the hotel is far from most means of public transportation, it’s an easy walk to beginner hiking trails on Namsan mountain as well as several bars and cafes in the neighborhood.

Pros

  • Rooms larger than most
  • Easy walk to Namsan hiking trails
  • Facilities include a pool, ice skating rink, and spa

Cons

  • Public transportation is far
  • Design lacks a local flavor

Holiday Inn Express Hongdae

$$$ | 188 Yanghwa-ro, Seoul, South Korea

Conveniently located at Hongik University Station Exit 4, this no-frills, clean but basic accommodation has quick and easy access to the airport railroad and subway line 2. The hotel's 294 rooms offer not much more than a bed, flat-screen television, and a mini-fridge but like many Holiday Inns, breakfast is included in the price, complimentary coffee is available in the lobby, and a 24-hour concierge can speak Mandarin, English, and Japanese in addition to Korean. The hotel is also connected to AK Plaza, a small, five-story department store with several clothing boutiques, stationery shops, and restaurants. The standard design and general mood have not been localized to reflect the neighborhood, meaning the hotel lacks a Hongdae flavor overall, but it may be an attractive option for families and short-term tourists.

Pros

  • Trusted brand
  • Complimentary coffee
  • 24-hour front desk

Ibis Ambassador Seoul Myeong-dong

$$$ | 78 Namdaemun-ro, Seoul, 04534, South Korea

An excellent value for both business and sightseeing, the Ibis Ambassador is a reliable hotel choice in this location. While the rooms won't win any design awards, they are pleasant and comfortable, and the staff is quite warm and helpful. The hotel's real selling point, however, is its location in the center of Seoul's downtown shopping area, also a short taxi or subway ride from museums and Seoul's historic neighborhoods. For guests who just want a place to sleep, the standard rooms are fine, but if you want to spend some time relaxing in the hotel it is worth upgrading to a slightly larger room. It follows the Ibis formula to the letter, so if you've stayed at one before there are no surprises.

Pros

  • Hotel brand has a familiar model
  • Warm, helpful staff
  • Close to shopping

Cons

  • Lacks amenities
  • Generic decor
  • Standard rooms are small

Imperial Palace Seoul

$$$ | 640 Eonju--ro, Seoul, 06098, South Korea

For a decidedly Korean take on a lavish European hotel, look no further than the Imperial Palace. The lobby looks a little like an extravagant version of a Venetian palace, but it comes across as nostalgic and charming (albeit with a touch of unintended kitsch). The rooms feel a bit dated, but are often adorned with furnishings and art that the manager found on overseas travels. There isn't much of interest in the immediate vicinity, but the main shopping and nightlife of Gangnam is a short taxi away. On the plus side, the service is excellent. While not for everyone, the Imperial Palace can make for a very interesting stay.

Pros

  • Great service
  • Interesting décor and rooms

Cons

  • Décor may be over the top for some
  • Everything feels dated, albeit in a faded opulence sort of way

L'Escape Hotel

$$$ | 67 Toegye-ro, Seoul, South Korea

A ten-minute walk from Myeongdong central, this belle époque–inspired hotel designed by Jacques Garcia (also known for his work at the NoMad Hotel in New York) has become one of the most popular in the area since opening in 2018. As such, the hotel is filled with dark, rich colors and lavish patterns. Another known feature of the hotel is its receptiveness to pets, and the entire 9th floor has suites that are dog- and cat-friendly. The hotel has a Starbucks Reserve, a cocktail bar called Marque d’Amour, and two restaurants. Palais de Chine, their modern Chinese restaurant, is a favorite among Seoulites.

Pros

  • Strong interior design
  • Renowned dining options

L7 Hongdae

$$$ | 141 Yanghwa-ro, Seoul, South Korea

Opened in 2018, Seoul's third L7 location is on brand with others in the Lotte chain, known for bringing big design into smaller quarters. The hotel's 340 rooms, most of which are 24.8 square meters, may be a cozy fit for many, but they’re clean, well-maintained, and much more affordable than most in the neighborhood of the same standard. The hotel’s star feature is the outdoor swimming pool on the 22nd floor, a large space accompanied by a bar and adorned by colorful lounge chairs. While the pool is only open during summer, few hotels of this price range feature an outdoor pool in this corner of the city. There is an extra surcharge to use the pool, as with most Korean hotels. Noticeably missing are facilities for children and affordable in-house dining options, but the hotel does have a guest laundry on the fifth floor and a 24-hour lounge with a pool table and record player on the 21st floor.

Pros

  • Rooftop pool
  • Clean and well-maintained

Lotte Hotel Seoul

$$$ | 30 Eulji-ro, Seoul, South Korea

A good base for sightseeing, shopping, and nightlife, the Lotte Hotel is just a few steps away from Euljiro 1-ga Station. While the rooms have a classic, Western luxury hotel feel, some of the furnishings do need to be updated. Two noteworthy highlights include its direct access to the Lotte Department Store and the free use of the pool (unusual in Seoul). Savvy visitors can often find excellent discounts, which makes the Lotte a good deal for what it is—a quality, conveniently located, high-end tourist hotel. Conventions and weddings are often held here and groups often buy out rooms in packages.

Pros

  • Excellent location with direct access to Lotte Department Store
  • Free use of pool (unusual in Seoul)
  • Often runs discount promotions

Manaedang Guest House

$$$ | 103--2 Gyedong--gil, Seoul, 110800, South Korea

Manaedang is about as close as you can get to a B&B experience in Seoul. Originally the house of independence activist, poet, and Buddhist monk Han Yong-woon (nicknamed Manae—thus the name), Manaedang has a new lease on life as a guesthouse. The real draw of Manaedang is the same as that of bed and breakfasts worldwide—the feeling of being in someone's home, and of meeting other guests. The bright, clean rooms have a traditional feel, but with modern touches such as internet access and air-conditioning. Not all rooms have a private bathroom so if that's an issue make sure to check when booking. And as with any of the hanok guesthouses, the bedding consists of futons rather than mattresses.

Pros

  • Located in the middle of the traditional Bukchon area
  • Comfortable B&amp
  • B feel

Cons

  • Not all rooms have private bathrooms
  • Some guests may not appreciate sleeping on the floor

Voco Seoul Myeongdong

$$$ | 52 Toegye-ro, Seoul, South Korea

Opened in late 2024, the Voco hotel is a four-star accommodation beloved for its location just minutes outside of Hoehyeon Station and its views of the Namsan Tower. The aesthetic of the rooms are generally white, with hints of purple, blue, and yellow. The hotel also has a fitness center with an indoor pool and a business center accessible to guests 24 hours a day. There are 576 rooms, so it may attract large tour groups and the lobby may be a bit hectic during check-in. The Westin Josun Seoul

$$$ | 106 Sogong-ro, Seoul, 04533, South Korea

Thanks to frequent renovations, excellent staff, and an understanding of the needs of 21st century travelers, Korea's very first luxury hotel has long been one of its best. Rooms are not as spacious as similarly priced hotels, but most are elegant and comfortable. While the Westin Josun's frequent renovations means that rooms are generally new and in excellent shape, some older rooms are less than what one would expect from this price range. The hotel has several in-house dining options, including a well-reputed deli, and has a fitness center, swimming pool, and sauna as well. It's not the most dramatic of Seoul's downtown luxury hotels, but the Westin Josun is a good choice for those seeking a hotel with a long history of comfort and excellent service.

Pros
