My husband and I got married at Kona Village and went back on our first year anniversary. It is the most romantic place. We did the Luau both times and really enjoyed it. They have great food and a very nice show along with it. It is considered the best on the big island and would have to say that it is wonderful

The Sheraton Keauhou now has a luau with Danny Couch - we are going in a few weeks. I'll post to let you know how it is!

To be honest - I have no idea who Danny Couch is...he is kind of like a less famous Don Ho? I saw some of his fan websites - they seem to like him

I did the Kona Village Resort Luau. It was nice.

A friend of a friend of a friend said that the Danny Couch show was the worst show on the islands. It must be if someone is reviving two year old posts to place ads.

This OP went his show because it was part of a package deal. Sounds like it wasn't that great.

Aloha, I think the Kona Village Resort Luau is the best on the island, they offer 2 one on Friday and one on Weds. Reserve early as seating is limited. Very authentic and the setting is super.

But is it worth the $200 we would spend (which doesn't include drinks)?? We made a reservation for August, but now I am torn about spending that much on a luau versus doing something more adventurous like a boat tour of the NaPali Coast? Very different activities, I know, but which would you choose?

sessa, I've done two luaus (one on Maui and one on the BI) and have enjoyed both - but kinda felt that I was there because you are "supposed" to do a luau in Hawaii. If it were a choice between a luau and the boat tour, I'd probably choose the boat tour. It's all personal preference of course.

I went to the Kona Village Luau last year, (July).
First off, it's in the middle of nowhere so someone has to drive.
I thought it was a reasonably good evening. So long as you're not expecting the West End of London or Las Vegas you should'nt be disappointed.

SESSA, they charged me the equivalent of about $120. That seems like a very large price hike in a year. I did call them from the UK, (mug) and make the booking. Don't know if the personal approach makes any difference?

Regards.

I too would also choose the Napili coast boat ride over the luau. However, we enjoyed the Kona village experience greatly...go early so you can tour the village, the food was good and the setting great.

Thanks for the input. Losttime-I believe the price they gave us for Kona Village was $98 per person. My husband has been to Hawaii several times and wants to do a luau since it is my first trip. I guess I was just surprised at the cost, but if we're going to do it I suppose we should do the best one!

aloha, the Kona Village is the best luau on the big island..I said the same thing about danny couch..til I met him...I used to waitress on oahu well for 11 years and he came in, I think he was before my time because the older waitresses knew him, but he sang for me and he has a beautiful voice. are you staying at the kona village? If so then I would definately go to that one, not only would it be the best but you would only pay $11.90 per person if you are a guest of the hotel...if not then I believe it is $99 per person and then you do want to reserve early because they do reserve many spots for their hotel guests first and foremost..if you haven't booked your hotel...they get great great reviews..their meals..top of the line and included. For future reference if you return to hawaii and go to maui or even if going to maui perhaps on this trip...the old lahaina luau is voted #1 in the state of hawaii (all islands) most authentic luau...but if only going to the big island definately do the kona village.

Chris-
We are staying in a hale on the Kohala Coast so I don't think the drive to Kona Village will be too far. We are also going to be in Kauai for 5 days, but I haven't read much about luaus on that island. We actually have a reservation for the KV luau on the Friday that we will be on the BI.

Just my two cents but for those who are new to Hawaii, a Luau (party) is essential.. Do your homework and find one that is in your budget and authentic. You don't need to pay an arm and a leg for one. Plus according to last reports there isn't a great one on the Big Island! Thus the reason "Origins" was born. Perhaps instead of a large commercial type you should consider attending a small more private type. They are available and more home town funky.

No worries mate the rumors you hear about Danny Couch and his show are false. His shows are the best in Hawaii. But... he no longer performs on the Big Island.. He has returned home to Waikiki where he belongs, where he has opened his own show to rave reviews. FYI for those who ask he has been performing and recording for 30 years, performed at the Hale Koa Hotel on Oahu for 14 years. His original group was The Ali'is. (famous award winning group and recording stars '80's vintage) and back up band for the Late Great Don Ho. Danny's famous song "These Islands" was used to help promote Hawaii, worldwide in commercials and was the Theme Song at the Miss Universe pageant. He is well loved and his fans adore him. If you care for more info just ask otherwise you are missing one of the true gems of the islands. The reason posts have been resurected is due to public comments about his career taking place that need to be corrected by someone who knows him.
