Went to this luau in June 2001. It has a nice location, but the food and entertainment were nothing special. Like a Las Vegas act transported to a Hawaiian locale.
I understand that the Kona Village luau is considered more authentic. The most widely praised luau is the Old Lahaina Luau on Maui.

Just attended the luau at the Royal Kona Resort last week and have to say it was great. The food was very good and the show and costumes rival any luau I have attended. Would highly recommend it. They have it on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Also at $55 it was the least expensive luau I have attended.

We also enjoyed the Royal Kona's luau, the place is a bit run down but what a spectacular location oceanfront. There are deals in the visitor magazines or thru the Pleasant Hawaiian desk in the Royal Kona's lobby for discounts--we were able to get in for about $45 per adult and kids free (which was great since our 9 yr old is going thru a growth spurt and quite hungry lately!)
According to most folks the Kona Village Luau is the most "authentic".
Konaweb forum (www.konaweb.com) is a very helpful place to post for Big Island visitors. Also the book "Hawaii-The Big Island Revealed" is excellent.
