Where to Stay in Cooperstown NY?
I've read a bit about the area, but need some help with the choice of lodging? I'll be in Cooperstown in late July for two nights with my family (not HOF weekend).
If we don't stay at the Cooper Inn or the more pricey Otesaga Hotel, what are my best choices?
We are looking for something economical, and I know there are a number of smaller motels in the area (within a couple of miles). I just don't know if there are any real 'gems' out there.
Thanks for your help...

Several years ago, I stay at a B&B in Cooperstown. I am sorry that I forgot the name. Cooperstown seems to have a ban on fast food and national brands of hotels. I'm surprised that they do not ban TV and cell phones. I don't know if they ban xerox copiers, forcing people to use carbon paper.
A pretty town, but anti-development!

I can tell you one place I wouldn't stay -- the Tunnicliffe Inn. It's well-located, right in the heart of Cooperstown, but kind of dumpy and old. Also, they don't have A/C, so even thought it's upstate NY, it can get hot in late July. When we stayed there, they advertised "ceiling fans," which turned out to be basic noisy desktop fans.

We liked the Inn at Cooperstown--it seemed family-friendly, in that it wasn't that lace-doily, stuffy sort of place. The location was within walking distance of just about everything except the Farming Museum and the art museum. And it was large enough to afford privacy. Cooperstown proper didn't appear to have any chain properties or restaurants at all.

We have always stayed at the Mohican Motel. It is a mom&pop but it is clean & has A/C. Main Street is walkable although it is possible to park on the streets (early am) & at the visitor center (free -- I think).
There is a fairly new Best Western just outside of town (NOT walking distance) that looks nice. It is in an entirely new development with McDonalds, super market, etc.
I also believe there a some nice "economical" lakeside motels.

Last September we stayed at a mom and pop resort called Fieldstone Farm Resort. It had a pool, ponds, gorgeous landscaping. Because the cottages are not on the main road my kids loved being free to run around and play. They walked to the game room all by themselves! The owner John was really great too! We will defiantly stay there the next time we visit the area.

This is really a tough place to find lodging, and we have stayed as much as 40 miles away. You see, the baseball crowd and the Glimmerglass Opera crowd are in competition for a very small number of rooms. I have eaaten at the Otesaga, and if I could afford it, I might stay there.
Driving back to Sharon Springs after the operal lets out at 11 is not fun.
