When is the ideal time to ski Telluride??

We are planning a ski trip to Telluride and are pretty flexible between Jan. and Feb. I have noticed the rates drop a bit in mid Jan. and was wondering if there is a reason for this...we can do either.Any suggestions??

Of course, weather fronts cannot be accurately predicted this far in advance, so there is no way to tell which month will be the best this year, and every year is different.

With that said, it has been my experience that December and January seem to have less snowfall as compared to February and March (December and January are also colder!). I would plan a trip as close to the end of February as possible.

Agree with tskobo - later in Feb the weather is generally warmer and better snow. That said, the change in rates is not due to snow conditions but due to occupancy.

Hotels, condos and consequently flights to the mountains generally correspond to a 7 night, Sat to Sat booking. Due to the economy, properties are being more flexible, but not during the busy times. For skiing, the busy weeks are Xmas-New Years (ending January 3rd), MLK weekend (us around 3rd weekend in Jan), Presidents Week (us around the 14th-21st) then March for Spring Break. Rates drop in the interim to fill space between these peak times.

Depends on the year but we have had great trips the last week of Jan and prices, great snow and crowds are still low then. But, at the same time, we've hit low snow years. I think if you before Wash. birthday, you should be okay in Feb. The reason the rates are lower in Jan. is that it is usually the coldest month, and snow conditions are unpredictable.
However, although it's too early to tell yet, we are getting a good base now.
