I'm visiting Olympia, WA and I hope to meet my son and his wife half way between Olympia and Sandpoint, ID for an overnight. I'm not finding much in the way of towns or accomodations about 3 hours east of Olympia. Any suggestions? We like good food and a nice play to stay.

The only thing I see on the map is Moses Lake. Does anyone know about that town?

What about Ellensburg or Wenatchee? Howevern,both are a little further away from Sandpoint. The best options are in Wenatchee with lots of hotels/motels to pick from. Ate at a steakhouse there, but can't recall the name.
There isa Comfort Inn in Ellensburg, but only had one meal there, it wasn't memorable and I don't recall the name of the restaurant.

Eastern Washington is largely agricultural, so you won't find many charming towns or good restaurants. Moses Lake isn't a very attractive place, but if it's more important just to spend time with your son and you can compromise on locations, and you can get a hotel rec (above), it's no worse than anyplace else in the area.

One idea that comes to mind, if a nice place to stay and good food are paramount, is the Cave B Winery. It's not really that far out of your way. I haven't been there, but I've heard good things:

The Yakima Valley is an emerging wine area, though it's still mostly vegetable and fruit crops--it might be worth looking into, to see if there is a good b and b there.

Too bad Walla Walla is further south than is convenient to you. That would fit the bill.

Cave B Inn didn't come to mind. It's not the kind of place we prefer, but if you in the market for an upscale experience, it might be perfect for you. You would have a three-hour drive and your son and his wife about a four-hour drive.

Leavenworth is cute, and about 3+ hours east of Olympia. A bit further (5 hours maybe) from Sandpoint. Wine tasting, shopping and decent restaurants, and LOTS of lodging choices. Snow is also a possibility, depending on when you're making this trip.

Just back from Olympia, WA. Our son and his wife suggested Soap Lake Inn at Soap Lake. Definitely a little piece of Americana! The Soap Lake Inn had nice, clean rooms...a little like staying at "Grama's house"! We had dinner at the only place in town, called Don's. The food was very good, the atmosphere was very "retro" and the prices were a little more than you would expect from the look of the place and the town. That's probably why we were the only people in there.

Before dinner we went hiking at dry falls on the Grand Cou Lee (sp?). The scenery was absolutley beautiful and the weather was clear that day. We could see for miles.

We had a nice visit and the Inn has dog friendly rooms which worked well since the family we met have two dogs.

Next time we will try Moses like.

Soap Lake has the only life size sundial. It's a beautiful statue of a native american couple. Definitely something to see!
