Sedona rooms - view or convenience?

We will be spending one night in Sedona the first week in April. We have two kids (12, 15). We will have a rental car. Which would be a better place for us to stay: The Sky Ranch or Best Western of Sedona which have views but we have to drive into town - OR - Best Western Arroyo/Los Abrigados Lodge/Cedars/Orchards where apparently we can walk to shops/restaurants? We plan to eat at the Cowboy Club and take a jeep tour. I tend to think w/our limited time we should go for convenience but the Sky Ranch looks interesting.

Have you checked tripadvisor.com? It seems people love the views at Sky Ranch but have lots to say about it being pretty run down. I go to Seodna once or twice a year, and although I stay at Junipine up in Oak Creek, I am familiar w/the places in uptown that you list (I've visited friends at a few of them). Los Abrigados Lodge is very nice; Best Western, best part is their creekside villas, they are BIG w/private balconies and the one I visited has a great view (not sure they all do though), and you get the indoor/outdoor heated pool/spa. I don't know Orchards, but there is also a review on tripadvisor of that one I think. But you can get views at some of these places and it sounds like a nicer room than Sky Lodge. People seem to like Sky Lodge for the view and grounds- not the rooms. If you don't stay there, you can still drive up the airport road that Sky Lodge is on, and there is a parking area where you can park and walk a few ft. to have the front row seat view for sunsets.
Personally, with just one day I would stay uptown so you can easily walk around to shops and dinner, but have a nicer room and still have the views.

We stayed at the Sky Ranch last April - the rooms were absolutely fine, spacious and clean - certainly not 'run down'. I would say it's a 2* motel in a very nice setting. It's about a 15 minute ride to the downtown. There are fabulous views from the overlook which is a few hundred feet from the entrance.

We stayed at the Best Western Sedona, the one NOT located downtown. Spacious rooms, nice view from a shared, HUGE balcony. Didn't matter that we had to drive a few minutes because the shoppes closed early in the evening anyway, (which surprised us). There was one little 'strip plaza' open late, with an ice cream shoppe, but that was it. Oaxaca (sp?)is a great place for a yummy, resonable mexican dinner, also with a great view. Do a search here for tons on the area, restauants etc.

The Pink Jeep Tour is a must, and take a peak at the church built in the rocks (name escapes me right now)

Sedona is gorgeous, enjoy!

Our family will be in Sedona at the same time. After much deliberation, we are staying at the new Hyatt Pinon Pointe property. Do a search on here to read about it. When I made my Pink Jeep reservation yesterday, I told the guy on the phone where I was staying and he said "you'll love the Hyatt. It's beautiful and in a great location". I have been to Sedona twice before at bed and breakfasts, and look forward to the spaciousness and location of the Hyatt units. I would stay in town if only there for 1 night, we'll be there for 2.

Stayed at the Best Western of Sedona (not the one downtown) as well and it was great! The view was awesome from our balcony. Loved the Cowboy Club for ribs. Great marguritas too! Yes take a jeep tour - the kids will love it.

You can get both views and convenience at The Orchards. We go there several times a year and are from Phoenix. We find it most convenient for us and our guests, we also always eat at The Cowboy Club, really good and popular. Probably sometime I will have to try some of the other suggested hotels, but The Orchards just seems to fill the bill. We also stay at Junipine, but it is a bit of a drive into Sedona and we don't like to do it at night.

Thank you all.
Edye - I already tried the new Hyatt Pinon Pointe and there are no rooms availabe that night. It is supposed to be great though.
EMD - Yes, I guess with less than 24 hours to spend in Sedona we really should make it easier on ourselves. You have me wanting to stay at the BW
Ellen - That's ashamed things close early! And we will be there on a weekday On the other hand, it's spring break time so maybe some places will take advantage of the additional tourists? Oaxaca sounds great - we love Mexican food and can't get it around here!
