Sarasota/Siesta Key--what to do?
Our family is considering a day trip either to Sarasota or Siesta from the WDW resort during the Christmas holiday.
Any suggestions of what to do or where to go? If the weather is nice, we'd like to walk on one of the beaches for a bit, but beyond that, not sure how to maximize our experience.

Took a look at the state park...looks nice...alligators don't bother me, but freak out my 13 y/o.
Do you know anything about the biking on Siesta...are there dedicated bike paths, or do you ride on main roads?

You can bike on Siesta Key, but there are better bike paths on Longboat Key, which is also part of Sarasota. I would highly recommend the Circus Museum; I have not met a child of any age who didn't enjoy it. Siesta Beach is a beautiful beach with talcum powder sand. I think you and your son would enjoy a couple of days in Sarasota. You and your son would also probably enjoy Tampa, especially Busch Gardens and the Science Museum.

Will enthusiastically second Siesta Beach. Depending on your interests, in Sarasota you might perhaps enjoy a visit to the Sarasota Classic Car Museum or the Ringling Museum of Art, across the street from each other.

I have seen people bicycling on Siesta Beach, though they dismount and walk through the life guarded areas. Don't know about bike paths there.
The Selby Botanical gardens are very much worth a visit http://www.selby.org/.
As is the Mote Marine Laboratory (small aquarium and other exhibitshttp://www.mote.org/.
Way more than you can get through in a day!

The beaches on Longboat are talcum powder soft and not overcrowded by any means. Bike paths run from end to end, Mote Marine is there to entertain children and there's great restaurants like Lazy Lobster, Salt Dog too.
