Pointe South Mountain Resort, Phoenix

Hello all,
My husband surprised me with a weekend getaway to Pointe South Mountain Resort in Phoenix next weekend so that we can escape cold, snowy Colorado. I am very excited! What is the resort like? I haven't seen many reviews. We only have two full days and we want to relax and spend a lot of time outside, enjoying the hiking trails, etc., but I was wondering if there are any nearby sites that we shouldn't miss. We'll have a car but don't want to spend a lot of time driving. We love the outdoors and are very active.

Also, are there any less expensive golf courses close to the resort? We are thinking about golfing but don't want to spend the $150 to golf there. I realize since it's high season, we might have trouble finding something.

Thanks for your help!

I haven't stayed there so can't comment on that, but drove through the resort...right through the middle evidently, looking for a hiking trail on South Mountain last month, and just want to tell you, the resort is BEAUTIFUL!! It will be a nice winter getaway. If you find the hiking trail, let me know for future reference! LOL

The trailhead to the National Trail is close to the entrance to the resort. You will need to ask someone if you can't locate it. Follow the trail to Fat Man Pass and you'll pass though some Petroglyphs.
Ask someone about Ken McDonald golf course. Link:

Never played it but appears reasonable...may be hard to get onto though.
Enjoy.

I've stayed at this resort. If you don't really like the first room you are given, ask to change rooms. Some are not in as good a shape as others. They have little kitchenette/wet bar areas w/fridge, microwave, etc. The resort is big but you can park your car close to the room; there are lots around all of the many bldgs. Pretty blooming bouganvilla trees and little courtyards on the interior of the bldgs.

You'll be close to south Mtn. Park for hiking. Check out the golfing at Sheraton Wild Horse Pass which is at the next exit out off the hwy. You might also want to try dinner at the restaurant at Wild Horse Pass, it is very good and much much better food and service than at Pointe South Mtn.

Hi There!

We've never stayed at the Pointe, but it's about 1.5 miles from my house, so we drive by often. It's a beautiful looking hotel, and I've heard raves about the water park! South Mountain and all it's trails http://phoenix.gov/parks/hikesoth.html is super close.
Oh, and FYI- Wild Horse Pass is not the next freeway exit, it's about 5 exits down, but you can't miss it
Also, there are municiple/public courses all over the place, including several in Ahwatukee-just south of the Pointe. http://www.azgolf.org/directory_new/...?facilityid=96

Have a fantastic visit!
