Newark Airpot into the city - AirTrain or Amtrak?
I will be parking my car at Newark Airport and head into the city on a Saturday morning and come back on Sunday. What is the best way to head into midtown? The AirTrain or Amtrak? I'm not really familiar with the AirTrain so any info would be helpful. Also, how do you get from the airport terminal or parking lot to the train stop?

Check out the AirTrain website. You have to take the AirTrain to to a stop on the Northeast Corridor. Both Amtrak and NJ Transit stop at the station. NJT is the cheaper option. They both go into Penn Station, NY.

AirTrain service is provided by both Amtrak and NJ Transit. Same track, same destinations, different prices and schedules. NJ Transit is cheaper by more than half ($11.55 vs. $27), so it's what I use. Info online at

You take the airport monorail (called AirLink, I believe) right to the train station at the Terminal C end of the airport, near Parking area P4. Looks like your best bet is to park at P4, then get on the monorail for the one stop to the AirTrain station. Not sure if it is close enough to walk from P4 to AirTrain.

If you were to park your car at Newark's Penn Station, or Gateway Center across the street from Newark Penn, you'd probably pay less for parking, and definately would pay less for train transportation to Manhattan. PATH train $1.50 or ~$3 for NJT train. The additional drive is not that far or busy on weekends.

Just another note about cost. P4 is the parking deck for AirTrain at Newark airport and it is an easy walk from the deck to the AirTrain stop. However, parking there is not cheap. It's about $20 for a 24-hour period, so you might end up paying this much or more if you are staying the city overnight. If you're going to park at the airport, you might want to consider the economy lots.
Also, as mentioned, the AirTrain fare between the Newark Airport station and New York Penn Station is $11.55 each way on NJ Transit. This surprised me when I first used AirTrain, because the off-peak roundtrip fare from my local NJ Tranist station (which is 10 stops further out) is only $13.75. If you are aware of a local NJ Transit station anywhere near you, you would be better off price-wise to take the train from that station into the city rather than from the airport. The fare would be much cheaper, and weekend parking is free at all of the stations that I'm familiar with.

The NJ Transit fare from Newark Airport is o high because it's actually something like a $4.55 fare plus a $7.00
facility use fee for the connection to the airport tram. Ia suume it's to pay for the building of the tram and station. Personally, Ithink it's worth it. The NYC area is way behind most other major cities worldwide in terms of having train links from airport to city, and since the "Airtrain" fare compares with the airport buses, I'd rather use the train

If you are not against other options, I know of two good alternatives that should be cheaper and and maybe quicker.
Not sure how to find out about information on the lot, but there is a parking garage at the Newport PATH station in Jersey City. It's a perfect spot to park... hop on the PATH train that's right there and you should be at Penn Station in about 15-20 minutes. I've parked in the lot before and am pretty sure you can park overnight. Check the NY/NJ Port Authority page for more info.
Another option is to take the ferry from Weehawken and park in their lot. It's easy to get to... last exit before the Lincoln Tunnel. I believe their website is www.nywaterway.com.

If I was doing this I would opt to drive into Manhattan! Traffic will be light. You can park the car at the Port Authority bus Lot, which is accessed just after exiting the Lincoln Tunnel( entrance on the very right or very left side depending on the tunnel entrance that you used!. Look for the 'Blue" Park and Lock signs. It is self-parking, secure. You can come and go back to the car if you need to rest or get sometning out of the trunk! The price is less than Newark Parking...just a thought!
