Model Sailboat Rentals in Central Park

Our middle school group of 36 people (27 students, 9 teachers) were planning on renting rowboats in Central Park at the Loeb Boathouse in early June. However, I just found out that they are doing work on the dock and they don't expect the rowboats to be back in operation by then. I've read about the model sailboats that can be rented and raced at Kerbs Boathouse by the Conservatory Water. Do you think this is something the kids would enjoy? They are all 13 and 14 years old. Thank you.

Sounds interesting.

Would today's teenagers be interested in model boat sailing? I would think that they would more interest in the Apple Computer store at 5th Av between E59th & E58th Sts (or the FAO Schwartz toy store right next to it on the E58th St side). It has been quite a while since I was 13 or even 14.

I have been trying to check out the rental rate for the model boats. So far all I have been able to find is that it is at least $11 per half hour (30 minutes). That seems a bit expensive for 13 and 14 year olds.

Since you would know your students better than any of us, perhaps you should take a poll ahead of time to see how many would be interested in model boat sailing (at the rate cited above).

At Those prices I'd get a group rate at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and let them go exploring in small groups. You might encourage them to explore the website in advance.

I've watched those boats. They are scale model Lasers and, though they won't tip, the do require some sailing skill to get underway and keep sailing. The breezes can be quite unpredictable as well.

There are so many great things to do in NYC - that is seems kids that age should be doing something with more content:

Museum of Natural History - dinos?, Hayden planetarium?

The Met - egyptian dep't and Temple of Dendur? arm & armor?

Visiting the Intrepid aircraft carrier and space shuttle exhibit
