We used Ekahi Tours about ten years ago. It was a very long day as we went all the way around the back in a big loop.

There are quite a few options on this site: http://www.maui-tours.net/tours/tourType.cfm?ttid2=5435
I took the SUV tour and I also recently drove the Road to Hana twice, logging all of the best stops based on mile markers, etc. Let me know if you want some additional tour information and highlights. I am writing a guide with detailed photos and maps, but it isn't finished yet.

We rented a car while on the island and drove the highway ourselves. Treacherous but we would have felt trapped in a bus or van. Driving on our own allowed us to stop as needed and stay in a place as long as we wanted. Be sure to make a stop at the park that has the Black Sand Beach. There is a small little cave you can take a dip in, very refreshing.

I've never gone with Temptation Tours myself, but I've heard lots of great things about them... if I ever take a tour to get to Hana (rather than do the drive myself), that company would be one that I would strongly consider.

We've driven it, and I certainly wouldn't call it treacherous. Unless you are used to flat, straight roads where you live, it's not that bad, just slow and winding and narrow. I would be unhappy if I could not stop where I wanted to.

READ THIS ABOUT THE ROAD TO HANA! It is NOT worth the 8 hour round trip drive....that's right, 4 hours each way, and the road has around 200 blind hairpin turns and around 50 single car width bridges. NOT a relaxing drive, but instead a white knuckled one. And once you get to Hana, there is not much there. Before going to Maui, I asked my friends who had been there previously how to see Hana and avoid the long rental car drive. They suggested that we take the helicopter tour one way, which allows you to see the volcano and then lands near Hana, then take the air conditioned tour bus back. That way you only have 4 hours in an automobile, and someone else who drives this road several times a week is doing the driving. We stopped at a waterfall, a native fruit stand, and a flower garden, and they fed us lunch and it was very low key and time flexible. The company I used to put this together was called Temptation Tours, but there are several that do the same thing. Our tour only had 6 people, so there was room in both the helicopter and very plush van for all of us. I am SO happy that we chose this option instead of 8 hours up and down a winding road. At the end, the tour bus takes you back near the airport where you parked your car to ride the helicopter in the morning. From there, you are only 15 minutes from Paia, the little town where Mama's Fish House is located. A great place to dine and end a fun day. Trust me, you will be laughing at the tired and grumpy tourists who wasted a whole day in their rental car on what is supposed to be their vacation.

CCTodd, I respectfully disagree. I love the trip to Hana. And Hana is a lovely place, and the area beyond it (what do they call the 7 sacred pools now?) was terrific. We went into the water there and had a great time. We also went into the water at the waterfall you are referring to and loved having the water falling on us! perhaps oldeer people might not want to do this, but younger ones can have a lovely time.
