Kalypso's in Hanalei?

I was upset when I heard Zelo's had closed down as my wife and I enjoyed their food and atmosphere. It's been replaced by Kalypso's but I have not heard much about it. Is the food good?

We loved hanging out at Zelo's also and were very disappointed when we saw the hot-pink Kalypso. In fact, the ladies at a nearby store told us that noone knew Zelo's was sold and literally saw the color and ownership transformation overnight.. Anyway, no, when we tried Kalypso in December of 2006 it was not good. Big plates of overcooked macaroni.. But, Hanalei Gourmet across the street in the old schoolhouse building was very good, as usual!

Wee, thats too bad. One less restaurant option on the north shore. We'll try Hanalei Gourmet.

Haven't eaten there, but hopefully our local resident food maven, auntiemaria will post a response.

Here are some recent reviews from tripadvisor:

Food maven, reporting in!

Even though it's within 5 minutes of our house, we've avoided Kalypso's thus far -- because the reviews from local friends and neighbors have been 99% negative...on both food and service.

Still getting good reviews from folks who live here are Grinds Cafe (breakfast/lunch/dinner take-out only in the Princeville Chevron Station), CJs Steakhouse (weekday lunch; 7-night dinner, in the Princeville Shopping Center), Hanalei Dolphin (lunch or dinner), Village Snack Shop (breakfast or lunch, for true local experience), Mediterranean Gourmet (lunch and dinner on the beach in Ha`ena)...and the new burritos at Wainiha General Store (on our lunch menu for today, so I'll give a review later!).

We too had liked Zelo's and were disappointed when it closed. But maybe Kalypso's food and service varies depending on staff and time of day. In Nov and Dec 2007 we twice had good lunches there, with same friendly, attentive server both times.

It was actually a former favorite, Hanalei Dolphin, where we experienced poor service and inconsistent meals.

I was not impressed with dinner at Kalypso's. The mediocre food was uninspired. Our other two dinners at Bar Acuda (delicious tapas, fun to share-great service) and Hanalei Gourmet (Macademia nut encrusted anything!)would not disappoint the more discriminating diners. A bonus was fairly decent musical entertainment at Hanalei Gourmet.

I forget to say we were in Hanalei in July of '08-perhaps things have improved since then.
