Has anyone stayed at the Days Inn on Connecticut Avenue in Washington?
Our family is thinking about using this hotel as a base for a mini-reunion.
Is the neighborhood safe?
What kinds of restaurants are nearby?
Is it family friendly?

Any comments will be appreciated.

Have not stayed there. The neighborhood is upscale residential and extremely safe 24/7. There are lots of restaurants of all kinds within a few minutes walk along Conn. Ave. in both diretions from the hotel. Unless I'm mistaken, I thought ALL Days Inn were family friendly.

Yes. I lived in two locations on Conn Ave before getting married and moving to the suburbs in MD. It is a delightful neighborhood and you can get anywhere quite easily - by bus, cab, car or possibly even Metro.

The reviews of this hotel on tripadvisor are pretty awful. Doubletree Suites is mentioned as something better that's nearby.

I stayed there a couple days on a business trip, but it was about 14 years ago. Hard to say how it may have changed inside, but at that time, it was a typical Days Inn. The room was okay, nothing disgusting, but I prefer to stay in nicer hotels myself. It's okay if you aren't expecting anything but a simple hotel. They advertised free breakfast in the lobby, but that was not very good or existent. That consisted of some cellophane wrapped doughnuts like from a vending machine, and they didn't even have coffee on at least half the days because their machine was broken. One reason I really didn't like it was because it was too family friendly and it rents rooms to school groups on DC trips, so there were a lot of noisy and out-of-control teens in the hotel. YOu know you aren't in a high-class place when there are video game machines in the lobby. I won't ever stay in a Days Inn again because of that experience (and this hotel was rated by them as one of their top properties, I'd hate to see the bottom ones). You probably won't mind all of those things I didn't like, however. At that time, it was overpriced for the quality, however, as you could get a nicer hotel for the same rate -- which I did and moved after a couple days.

The neighborhood is fine, as others said. It's a little duller and unattractive than some other DC neighborhoods (I don't consider it delightful and it wouldn't be my top choice), but okay if it's a good location for you.

The area is a little safer than others-but it is ridiculous to describe any area of Washington DC as "extremely safe"-such an area simply does NOT exist in the District. You must be very careful at night, even in this area. That said, the further north you move, the better off you are, from a safety and security standpoint. As an alternative, I would suggest, if you're looking in DC, as opposed to Crystal City or Bethesda (both areas have cheaper rates on hotels, and are well-served by Metro) that you look at the Holiday Inn Georgetown-in the 2000 block of Wisconsin Ave.-it's reasonably safe (safer than Conn. Ave.), a nice, quiet neighborhood, great little neighborhood restaurants (Bistro Lepic, Heritage India, Austin Grill, Sushi-Ko, to name a few) all within a very short 4-8 min. walk north, (walk a little further north, and you'll hit the National Cathedral) and a 7 min. walk in the other direction will take you right into Georgetown, with all its great shopping, restaurants (Cafe Milano, where all the stars/VIPs come when they're in DC-and a surprising number of them can be seen here, in any given week, like, for example, Viggo Mortensen, star of Lord of the Rings, just this past Saturday, after his art exhibition in an art gallery not a 3 min. walk from the Holiday Inn).

In other words, you might want do a little more searching, and check tripadvisor.com before making ANY hotel decision in DC.

Yes, I would agree, nowhere in D.C. is extremely safe but this area is better than average. I'd suggest that if you are only using the hotel as a central location for your family, and you'll be touring most of the time, I'd not bother with a more luxurious hotel. To me, a good location with a clean room is all I need when in a very walkable city like D.C.

I assume you are talking about the one in Woodley Park. That is probably in the safest neighborhood in DC with a nice mix of restuarants and Metro access.


But the term "extermely safe" is an inconsistent and subjective term. B/c one person term of safe is very different from anothers. Regardless, any hotel on Conn ave is going to be in a safe neighborhood. Disregard anyone that tells you otherwise. Additionally, any area NW DC west of Rock Creek park is no less safe than any other area of a major metropilitian area with a similar mix of office, residential and commercial properties, it is a disservice to the DC community to suggest differently.
