Hot August Nights in Reno
Has anyone gone to this? I gather it's a 50's theme to the event, but would like to know more about what to expect. We have friends who want to meet us in Reno in August to attend this. Thanks for any info or tips.

Hi Shaz, I haven't but I have a good friend who goes every year. And he loves it!
You might want to contact the Reno Chamber of Commerce for information regarding Hot August Nights.
And I think you would want to make early hotel reservations as it seems to be a popular event.
Have fun!

We went once for the day, while staying at Northstar with my partner's brother and wife. It was so fun -- but we left in early evening, when apparently the "cruising" of the old cars really takes place. During the day, all the 50's cars are parked at various sites and it's like one huge car show.

We (two couples) went in 2004 for 4 days.
The guys are "car nuts" and LOVED it. The town is completely taken over by cars. I must admit "fabulous" cars. The lots of the bigger casinos are filled with everyone and their "babies". We stood at the exit of the Peppermill lot one night as all the exhibitors were pulling out for the evening ... it was the best part to me ... everyone proudly, slowly, cruising by waving (and the engine sounds ... goosebumps!!).
We arrived on the first day ... I think things really start getting exciting as it nears the end (e.g. the bigger entertainers are there).
We stayed at The Sienna Hotel & Spa. If I went again I'd try The Silver Legacy.
If you go into the Peppermill hotel/casino wear your sunglasses "inside". Oh ... my ... gawd ... can you say NEON. Yikes.

I live in Reno. If you have any plan for coming this year you should call NOW to try to get a room. People that came last year will actually book rooms for this year before they leave town. I also know that some people end up having to stay down in Carson City or Truckee or up at the Lake...so good luck. I'm kind of "burned out" on it, living here, I have gone for so many years but it is great fun. There are a lot of different places to look at the cars and they also have several auctions. They close Victorian Ave. in Sparks and the cars are parked there for viewing and then at night the have the big parade of cars and of course downtown Reno is the same and on Sunday they have a HUGE parade of all the cars on Virginia Street. Lots of bands and music...all 50's. A lot of people dress up..poodle skirts and poney tails etc. It's really great fun. You can view cars at the Peppermill and the Hilton also. I think the idea of calling the Chamber of Commerce is a good one. I'm actually not sure of the dates this year...I don't pay that much attention unless I'm having family coming up for the event.

I do know that Reno hotel rooms fill up quickly (and the prices go up too) at this time....so book early or maybe make arrangements to stay outside of town - Lake Tahoe, Carson City, Truckee. If you like the 50's and old cars.....you'll love this. We're planning to go again this year, but have family to stay with, so we're lucky!

Just another note: last year they had 5,000 cars registered...that means they are official and can cruise and all that. There were actually MORE cars than that..some could not register but just come and tool around. It fills up fast...so if you like old cars, well..nothing more to say actually. For those that are coming, I hope you enjoy..it's a great week.
