Has anyone been to Jekyll Island in the last few months. I was wondering if the fires had made oit smoky. Also would like to know how recent vistors liked Jekyll.

Lynn,
My DH and I were at Jekyll June 8-10th for my 40th High School reunion. There had been enough rain that smoke wasn't a problem. However, the heat was almost too much for this Florida native.
Both temps and humidity were in the mid to high 90s during the day. Tolerable if you were in the shade with a breeze. It cooled off considerably after the sun set.
We had planned to rent bikes and explore the island but frankly just couldn't face it in the heat. Maybe it's our ages - I'm 58 my DH is 62. But we've hiked the slick rocks in the Southwest in May and not felt this hot. We did see some people out biking, so it is doable. Just depends on the person, I guess.
We plan to go back some Spring or Fall because it's a beautiful place. Tons of huge, old, oak trees dripping with Spanish moss. Wide expanses of salt marshes and easy access to beaches and other recreational areas. Some neat architecture and interesting shops, as well.
We went to the Sea Turtle Rescue Center which wasn't yet officially open. (It is now.) It's worth the time and small entry fee to learn about these sea creatures and get to see the ones in the "hospital."
Before we went, I remember doing a search here on Fodor's and found some fairly recent posts. There's a lot to do there. And like I said, we plan to go back sometime when it's cooler and I'm not wanting to spend all my time catching up on things with old classmates.
Hope this helps a little.

I spent Memorial Weekend at the Jekyll Island Club and it was wonderful!
We had a great room, one of the ones with the glassed in porches with views of the river and the room was very big.
The island was fantastic. We did a 25 mile bike ride around the island Saturday morning and found lots of cool places.
We didn't really leave the resort because we had dinner (rehearsal dinner) in the Grand Dining Room (fabulous) Friday night, the wedding reception Saturday night (OMG the food was FABULOUS!!! Best food I've ever had at a reception), and Sunday night was at the Beach Club (band, open bar, ribs, hot dogs, hamburgers, fish fry, etc).
I found stuff not to be too 'resort expensive'. Frozen drinks at the pool were $10 (I've paid over $20 at some resorts) and the staff was outstanding.
Great place, heat and humidity were fine while we were there.
No smoke at all, the ocean breeze kept the smoke off the island.

I am back from Jekyll Island. It was beautiful. We rented a house which wasn't very clean, although we were ocean front, next time I would stay at the Club Hotel. We at the Club Hotel and the food was the best. I liked lunch at the club because it was less expensive. My daughter ate at Blackbeards but the service was really bad. Had to wait an hour and a half for their food which wasn't very good, cold and over cooked. Barbara Jean's on St. Simon's was good. We went for lunch and didn't have to wait since we got there about 11:40. It got really busy after we were seated. The food is good and the prices are reasonable. Driftwood Beach is beautiful, as are all the beaches. I really enjoyed it. Nice, calm and relaxing. I loved the historic district. It is a beautiful island. We had squirrels living outside our house. They kept trying to get in, a rabbit lived in the brush near the porch. We saw alligators and got a lot of neat pictures of the gators. The water was really warm, I still can't belive how warm it was, although the climate was not as humid or hot as I expected. We may have lucked out, since I have never been that far south before. I would go back. It is different than any place I have ever seen before, the beach is wonderful.

Family members just returned from Jekyll. Here's a recap.
They stayed at the Oceanside Inn and Suites in a newly decorated oceanfront room. They loved the room. It had a big jacuzzi tub, nice furnishings and a great bed. I found a great rate for them that included a full breakfast at the restaurant next door.
They enjoyed their meal at Latitude 31 very much (on the marsh side - across from the Jekyll Club Hotel entrance)
We treated them to a special occasion dinner at the Grand Dining room at the JIC. They LOVED it. It was very pricey - but worth it for the special occasion.
A carriage ride through the historic district had been scheduled for them, but canceled by operater due to possible storms.
They went over to St. Simons, but did not stay long - too busy.
If you want a QUIET, low-key beach getaway, Jekyll is perfect. Go now. The Governor is trying to promote the development of the island and its quietness may not be for long. They've already torn down the Holiday Inn and another hotel with more to fall soon - for condos and new hotels.
I like the Oceanside (former Wanderer) because of the location, beachfront, good beach, grassy "yard" and nice pool. I've been going for years and it's my favorite place on the island. My rooms have been a bit "well-worn" - but I'm staying in rooms that allow pets. They said their room was gorgeous.
I've not had a good meal in years at Blackbeard's so I avoid it.
If you are looking for nightlife and lots to do, Jekyll isn't your place. If you want a quiet, natural island, visit Jekyll - soon!
