St. Simons vs. Jekyll Island
We're headed to these islands 3/31. I have tentative reservations at the Days Inn on St. Simon's, and at the Buccaneer Beach Resort (formerly Clarion) on Jekyll's. Any recommendations on either? We have a 10 year old son. He and my husband will golf, we'll all walk the beach, bike ride, explore, etc. Don't need or want fancy or busy. Do want a good restaurant. I'd like a good place to run. Suggestions?

Jekyll Island sounds like the choice for you. The fact that by law it cannot be developed has made it a tranquil, unspoiled place. In fact, a 10 yr old could explore the island by bike alone and be perfectly safe. You'll often have long stretches of beach to yourself. Even so, there are nice restaurants.

If you don't want busy, I'd stay on Jekyll Island. I was born and raised in Brunswick, GA. and spent all of my summers on Jekyll Island from sun up to sun down. Even though the island has changed some, the beach I used to hang out on is no longer there at high tide, it's still a wonderful place. Do you know which side of the island the Buccaneer Beach Resort is on? If it's on the south side the beaches are still fine. We stayed at the Holiday Inn for a family reunion in 1999 and really enjoyed it. I love the sand dunes and beach in that area and I believe that's where the Buccaneer is. I've been away from Georgia for over 20 years now but still have very fond memories. If you like hot dogs, make sure you go to Willie's Weenie Wagon in Brunswick. They're famous for their hot dogs. Enjoy!

I stayed at The Bucaneer many years ago. Our family enjoyed Jekyll Island at that time and I remember biking all over the island and there was also a large indoor pool that was located somewhere on the island. I think the better restaurants were on St. Simons and we would drive over there. Jekyll is quieter than St. Simons. You might enjoy taking the ferry over to Cumberland Island. It is totally unspoiled and you can see wild horses. It would quite an experience for your 10 year old. There were also excellent golf courses on the island.
