the link lists everything you need to know. If in doubt, just pack it in checked luggage and don't carry it on. You won't need cigarettes, lighter, vitamins while on the airplane anyway. Take as many shoes as you can get in the bag. The thing that bothers most people is going up and coming down- ear pressure. Chewing gum helps a lot of people. Flying really isn't a big deal, the airports and possible delays are what is annoying.
For future reference, you posted this as a trip report. This should be done after you have been somewhere, not before. Also, there are different boards on here. There is an board devoted to air travel. Click on link at top of this page that says "change forum" and you will see a ton of topics just about air travel. You might want to repost your questions there.

The airport's website should have a list of rules about what you can and can not bring on a plane. Certain kinds of lighters are allowed in carry on bags. Here's a link to an airport information page http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtrav...ted-items.shtm
You might be surprised that you cannot bring a bottle of water with you before you go thru security but after you go thru security you can buy a bottle of water so you can take it on the plane. I always take extra water on the plane. You can take as many of anything allowed in your carry on as can fit in it. Check the size bag that is allowed. I usually take extra food on long flights like my favorite snacks, a good book and magazines. Be sure to read the information about the size of liquid/gel items you can take in your carry on and putting certain items like a small tube of toothpaste in a quart size clear plastic bag so you can quickly remove things for inspection at security.
Read all the information and click on the links. This should answer all your questions.
BTW the reason why I bring extra food (i.e. an apple, stick cheese, trail mix) is because I have been on flights that have been delayed and arrived at my destination after restaurants have closed. I prefer not to eat salty peanuts if they are given out.

Perhaps the most important thing you need to know is the rules about taking liquids on the plane.
There are strict limits and rules you need to follow. That includes water bottles or drinks of any kind, shampoo, toothpaste, hair gel, peanut butter, olive oil, or anything of similar consistency.
The details are posted here.

Another key thing. Find out what time your airline requires you to check in. This is NOT the time you need to be at the airport. Check in - means when you actually hand over you luggage to the agent. Frequently it can take 30 to 45 minutes from the time you get on line until you actually reach the agent.
Also be aware that security lines can take a long time. Depending on the airport and the flight it might take 15 minutes to get through security or it might take an hour. When you get to security you will have to show your boarding pass - but don;t let it out of your hand. Everything you have with you - including jacket or purse or whatever - and often your shoes - will have to go through the belt on the screener. You may be selected to be wanded if you have anything metal that sets off the detector (a lot of change in a pocket, a large belt buckle etc - so I reco avoiding having any metal on you). And naturally you can;t take anything sharp on the plane with you.

Yes you can bring aspirins and vitamins.
You can bring however many pair of shoes you want that fit in an allowable-sized carry-on bag.
You can bring cigarettes, not sure about the lighter though, they used to take those away at the security checkpoint. Not sure if this is current info though.
It's the 3-1-1 gels/liquids requirement they pay most attention to these days, it seems. You can't bring a bottle of water thru security. You'll be asked to take off your shoes and jacket and put them in a bin when you walk thru the check point (as far as things to be aware of in advance).
