I had a really good experience at the Whistling Swan Inn centrally located in Fish Creek. The rooms are a little on the cozy side, but, we spent so much time outside the inn that the size of the room didn't matter much. They also have an excellent restaurant on site. Rooms decor is charming, great beds with down comforters and pillows, tasty breakfasts.
You are right, there are so many to choose from and most are very nice. Hope you enjoy your time in Door County!

We have also stayed at the White Lace Inn and I agree it is lovely. Sturgeon Bay is not my favorite spot in Door County, however. I would recommend one night there and then drive farther up into the peninsula. I like the west coast villages north of Sturgeon Bay the best.

As you are planning keep in mind it's still cold up there and many businesses/restaurants are closed or have limited hours (weekends only). We were there mid-May this year and were surprised that it was like Spring and flowers there just budding - temps in the 50's. But we still had a lovely time.

thanks for the suggestions. We knew it could be on the cold side but never thought about the fact that places could be closed. However, we are planning to be there over a weekend, so might luck out. Will check out the places mentioned.

If you want to go to Door County in the Winter the best time now is First weekend in February, Fish Creek Winter Festival. Lots going on and last year the weather was 39, sunny and lots of snow. Beautiful. Lots of outdoor activities and shops and restaurants are all open for the fun.

We live in Green Bay and manage to get up to Door County occasionally. We've stayed at 3 B&Bs and 1 inn in Sturgeon Bay and an inn in Sister Bay also. Since having kids, now we go to the resorts like Bridgeport and Stone Harbor.
Of the B&Bs and inns, our favorite is The Scofield House B&B. It is just wonderful. 3 course breakfasts and they give you a choice between 2 hearty entrees, treats on the table at night, and the proprietors are so nice and helpful with tips on things to do. It is also close to all of the quaint shops in Sturgeon Bay. We just love it there! Here is their website: http://www.scofieldhouse.com/
In Sturgeon Bay,we also stayed at the Barbicon which was nice but it only had a continental breakfast..we love breakfast and this wasn't what we were hoping for.
The White Lace Inn is very romantic and nice also. They serve a full breakfast also.
The Inn at Cedar Crossing is lovely..our room was a little small and they had a continental breakfast but they have a wonderful restaurant and I highly recommend it!
In Sister Bay, we stayed at The Churchill Inn and that was nice but larger and not as intimate a setting.
I don't think it really matters which town you stay in because all of them are within about a 45 min drive. We like to stay in Sturgeon Bay (in winter) because of many shops being closed in the smaller towns but there are still things to do in Door County.
One thing I would recommend is looking at this website for b&bs. http://www.wbba.org/ It's the Wisconsin B&B assn. The b&bs in this assn have a higher standard, I think. We stayed at a b&b in Lake Geneva and it wasn't in the assn, big mistake on our part....we will always stay at one in the assn.

Much of the fabled 'character' of Door County is found in its string of small villages along the Green Bay and Lake Michigan shores. Keep in mind that if you stay in Sturgeon Bay, you are about a 15 minute drive from Jacksonport and almost 25 minutes from Egg Harbor, the two southernmost villages. The White Gull Inn at the very quiet end of Fish Creek (about 2 blocks west of the aforementioned Whistling Swan) has been around for ever, but features beautifully furnished (mostly spacious) rooms and a charming restaurant. Most all the shops and restaurants will be open weekends (at least)in April. Enjoy your visit!

anywhere,is the cornerstone suites in Egg Harbor. Not a great name for a converted barn that has beautiful large suites that are reasonably priced. The largest suite
contains the barn silo that has a whirlpool at the base and a 360 degree viewing room at the top. I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Door county.
