I personally think the nicer places are away from the waterfront and would recommend the Queen Victoria (a bed and breakfast):

or The Virginia (a small hotel):

The Peter Shields Inn is very nice; if you prefer a "regular" hotel - the La Mer Motor Inn is also great - both of these are not very close to the main part of town however. You could also choose one of the B&B's on Jackson St - I recommend Windward House - most of these are only about 1 block from the beach. You don't say when you are going - if it's for this summer you might have trouble getting a room at the B&B's.

I would second the Queen Victoria. My husband and I are booked for July. t is only one block from the beach. We have stayed before and highly recommend it. The breakfasts are quite good and the owners are friendly and offer great service. The Peter Shields Inn has one of the best restaurants in Cape May. Never stayed there but have dinner there whenever we are in Cape May.
