Atlantic City Oct 22, Caesar's ($200) vs Holiday Inn ($161) vs?

We are going to spend 1 night Oct 22nd in Atlantic City on the Boardwalk. On Trip Advisor and on this site we've read that the Borgata is the best. Well, they're booked out for that night and it's $300 to stay there even if they did have space! Way too much for us.

Next is Caesar's in popularity and good reviews, but when I go to their website, I see a pic of this room
http://www.caesars.com/Caesars/Atlan...ccommodations/
which to my eye looks terribly dated and cheesy (red yucky carpet and white furniture? ) On their 1-800 # they say that that is what the room looks like and they haven't rennovated... Ughhh. It also has some pretty bad reviews on Trip Advisor about the condition of the rooms. How this the 2nd best spot in Atlantic City I can't figure out, and at $200 it seems a bad value. We don't even gamble... just going to see family in Atlantic City but will be getting there a night earlier than they are ready for us.

The other option was the Holiday Inn at $161 a night and they claim they could upgrade us being Priority Club members to Oceanfront or at least Ocean View on a higher floor. Their room looks MUCH nicer:

This room looks like the Ritz compared to the Caesar's room. I also checked out Sheraton and they are $179 a night, but with some bad reviews (and good too).

Some people said the Holiday Inn was at the end of the strip and not that convenient... All I can see us doing is checking out some of the casino gift shops, eating dinner at the Borgata, and hanging out in the room.

Any advice? Should we just try Priceline and call it a day? Whoops - we can't do that either as priceline includes 3 hotels, one of which is the Tropicana which gets reviews like this on Trip Advisor:

"Stayed in the North Tower at the Tropicana Sept. 23. The small room was a dump - worn out, dirty, outdated, 2 inches of dust and filth under the bed, discusting bathtub. There was a trail of ants eating something on the wall in the hallway. We did not feel save and comfortable in this hotel. A fat healthy looking mouse was scurrying around the buffet restaurant floor about 3:00 AM. The manager and waiter offered to move our table and pretended like nothing was wrong to prevent hysteria I assume. The restaurant was practically empty anyway and those of us who saw the mouse left immediately with our tables full of food. I only stayed at the Trop because the room was a comp. I will not stay there again unless they build a new tower of hotel rooms. I certainly won't eat there ever again."

Help!

Look for hotels that aren't on the Boardwalk, they are cheaper and since you don't gamble & are really only going to the Boardwalk for curiosity..that would be my choice.
Only been to Atlantic City once...it was tacky & dirty.

I hear ya, but part of the fun of coming up a night early IS to stay ON the boardwalk with a view of the ocean. I understand that philosophy of paying less for an off-water-view room, but we DO want that amenity!

Anyone else stay at any of these places in the last year?

stever:When you post quotes with obvious lies in them how do you expect to be taken seriously(2" of dust on the floor etc.etc.).The Holiday Inn is a low end chain hotel that in no way compares in quality to any of the casino hotels. If you want to stay there for budget reasons that's fine.No need for posting all the nonsense.

to mgmargate: Why do you say that they are obvious lies? The info I got was directly from Trip Advisor and was the most current review from the Tropicana. Along with this latest review were many other bad reviews of this hotel - it wasn't the only one that got 1 out of 5 stars. I certainly wouldn't post something on purpose that had a lie in it. It wasn't my goal to stir up controversy, only to report what I thought were the facts. Have you stayed at the Tropicana recently, or know it to be very nice?

I didn't realize that the casino hotels would be much nicer than the non casino hotels. That's something for us to think about.

the Borgata is gorgeous, but WAAAY overpriced... only for comps. It also is NOT on the Boardwalk, it's at the bay, Brigantine Bay inlet. The hotels next door to it are Harrahs marina (we gamble there, only stayed once) and Trump marina (stayed last year, i remember it was like any mid-range hotel. nothing glam, nothing bad) There is also a big diff in price from hotels on the boardwalk to those on the roads leading in to AC (10 min away by car) We stayed at nice Marriott/and I think Quality Inn that were on the Black Horse Pike, not in AC

Steve - if staying at Caesar's, you should know that there is a newer tower with better rooms. From your description, it swounds like you were looking at a room in the older tower. You might want to call and find out where you are booked and if you can request a room in the newer tower.

Also, have you checked out Bally's? It is right next to Caesar's and it's a pretty decent hotel (admittedly I haven't been there in a few years).

As far as the Tropicana review that you posted, that review sounds highly exaggerated. The last time that I visited AC I stayed at the Trop and, although I didn't particularly like it, it certainly wasn't as dirty and run down as the review would have you believe.

Steve:Just because someone says it doesn't make it true. If you can't tell that the Trop review is garbage then there is nothing else to say.

mgmargate: Sorry that I don't have the common sense to know what a bad review of a hotel is on Trip Advisor, and a bad "faked" review of a hotel on Trip Advisor. I wish I had more common sense to know these things, but I guess I don't. I only know that there were many very bad reviews of this hotel, and I was simply looking for confirmation of this and a recommendation as to where to stay.

Hope I didn't offend you or your sensibilities.

Peace,
Steve
