$500/night for cheapest room at Grand Wailea?

$500/night for cheapest room at Grand Wailea?
Hi everyone,
Looking ahead to next August.....DH and I are definitely going to Big Island, and possibly Maui. We loved the fancy pool at Grand Hyatt Kauai this past summer, so thinking of trying the Grand Wailea. Right now the cheapest rooms are $500/night! Kea Lani and 4S are both cheaper than that....any chance this rate will go down between now and August? TIA!

like you and your dh, we chose the grand wailea because we loved the pools at hyatt.
not the same thing at all, i'm afraid.
please just know that going in. (we paid less than $300 through expedia and moved hotels mid-trip, it was that bad).

here are the things that made us switch: we thought it would be a fancier hotel room, but it was not (we stayed in a room to the right, we were overlooking the chapel/lawn/beach.) it was the room interior that bothered me, not plush at all.
the hyatt pool in kauai (and in puerto rico where it's now a time share) always had that long river aspect that made it possible to enjoy without waiting on a line. the grand wailea pool had lines for everything- it felt like you were 6 again. once we spent 10 minutes per "attraction" we had enough and didn;t want to spend our vacation time on line.
the "adult pool" was just a big square and there was no service and sparse towels and no chairs available by 10am! (they were all "reserved" with peoples' things.)
we normally stay at small places, and maybe because we had been to las vegas a lot that summer (august 2004 was our trip), we decided big could be nice (bellagio, venetian, mandalay), too, therefore the condition of the room came as a surprise.
it was just such an enormous property.
also, this had nothing to do with the hotel, but i disliked that penned in feeling of wailea. the hotels are literally adjacent, border to border. we prefer the other side of the island, because for us, hawaii means space and palms, not lines and crowds.
that's what i meant by not like the hyatt kauai, which is much more isolated.
also, the hyatt spa is so outdoorsy and hawaiian, again this was not like that.
the hyatt has that artificial lake thing, again not here.
what i would do is if you have a great rate at 4S, why not see what it costs for the day use if you have a spa treatment at grand wailea. there must be some option that allows pool use. it won;t be inexpensive, but it won;t force you to spend hundreds a night if you are just going to ride the ride for the day.
on the other hand, if you two are the sort of people who would go to an amusement park two days in a row, you mighyt like that atmosphere. we like silence and the rustle of palm trees, and the g.w. was just too giant for our taste.

I too have stayed at the GW and the Grand Hyatt Kauai. You will be VERY disappointed at the GW. There is no comparison bewteen the 2 properties.
Whereas both properties are massive and impressive, the Grand Hyatt has a relaxing feel to it. Unless you opt to stay in the adults only area at the GW, you will feel like you are at a waterpark. You are also packed in like sardines at the GW. Not so at the Grand Hyatt. Also, you can pretty much forget about any pool side service at the GW.
I would stay at the 4S. Or, you may want to look into the Hyatt Maui. Not as grand as the Kauai property but very nice and the service ALMOST on par with the service at the Grand Hyatt.

The rates are mostly, all about dates. My daughter was going to honeymoon in Kauai in August last year. It was so expensive, she ended up going to Paris instead for less money. FYI, we are on the west coast.

I read your response and am wondering what places you would recommend on the "other side of the island?" I am assuming you mean west? We are going in March and have never been outside Wailea and don't know where to stay: kahana, kaanapali etc...can you provide some suggestions for condos rather than hotels?

On the Big Island, we have enjoyed the Mauna Lani (sp?). Not sure if you'd consider it a 'fancy' pool per se. But there are workers bringing around iced faceclothes and serving drinks at poolside, which we felt was a nice 'luxurious' touch. There are nice cabanas, too, if you want shade. Also a beach area with cabanas. The room was very nice, with a huge marble bathroom.
Next door to that property is the Orchid, which also looked very nice.
The Hilton Waikaloa has a couple of pools, but it's a property that's geared more to families with kids, so it gets pretty hectic. And the rooms are plain.
There's a nice little condo complex just below Kona, called Sea Village. Very nice units, beautiful ocean views. But not fancy. Great little pool, garden area with barbecues to use, free tennis court. Not a resort, just a nice little condo complex. They are individually owned, so Google for Sea Village and you'll find it. Reasonably priced, too.

Dh and I went to Maui several years ago and I had really wanted to stay at GW. For months I watched their rates and checked various sites for discounts - no luck. Finally I have up and we stayed at Kea Lani. We were THRILLED with out decision. It was so nice having a full suite (compared to a regular hotel room) and the bathroom was huge. We walked to GW and thought Kea Lani was much more laid back (this was before we had kids). The pool area at GW was full of kids having a great time, but if you want a more relaxed experienced, bigger room, and still a very nice high end hotel feel, I'd go with Kea Lani.
