1-quart pouch - could I use this?

http://tinyurl.com/69tczs

Please look at this photo on Kodakgallery.com and tell me what you think. This is a very sturdy translucent pouch and I have several of them - have used for years as the 'bath kit' for each of us. With the TSA requirement, I started separating certain articles just for the plastic quart baggie, so now I have TWO bags per person. Can't I just use these blue-ish bags?

If it's not an actual quart size ziplock baggie, then you risk having it tossed by security.

Also, if you need 2 quart size baggies to fit what's in this bag, then it's too big and won't be accepted.

What I meant about now using 2 bags (per person) is that we each have the 3-1-1 baggie for the liquids, but anything else that isn't a liquid we left in this pouch (also 1 for each of us). Before the TSA rule, everything we wanted fit into the pouch (each). If the pouch would 'pass muster' I wouldn't have to sort out the liquids. Or I could put the liquids in one pouch and combine our 'leftovers' into the other pouch.

The pouch is the same size as those being sold by Travelon as 'TSA approved' (8x8x2&quot, but they aren't built as well as mine, based on the reviews.

The only real difference is that there is a blue-ish tint to the material, rather than clear plastic.

I mean, they don't even look at them, they just x-ray 'em like everything else.

If the bag is the same as others that are "approved" by TSA, then they should be fine. They do have to be see-through so security can make a visual check of the contents. If they're not clear, you do risk security saying "no go" - it's all dependent upon the mood and attitude of the security officer when you go through and there's not a lot you can do if they decide the bag is unacceptable.

As for the separation of items, you can't put non-liquid items in with the liquids. They HAVE to be separate. The liquids HAVE to be in a quart size bag.

If you can fit all your liquids for two people in one quart sized bag, then that's fine. TSA doesn't care if you have less than the limit, they only care that you don't have more (which is one quart size bag per person).

They don't care how much non-liquid items you bring, how they are packed, etc.

Personally, if you can fit everything in the two bags, I would use one regular ziplock for all the liquids and use the nice bag for all the non-liquids. Why take the chance that you'll hit a jerk of a security officer and lose all your liquids AND your nice bag.

In my opinion, don't try to split hairs with TSA over your liquid's bag.

Just buy a box of the quart zip-locks from the grocery store and it's one less thing you can be hassled about going through security. "Close but not quite" won't cut it with TSA.

toed~ Are you sure the liquids have to be separate, in their own bag? I don't think that's correct.

I think it's that you can't have MORE than a single 1 qt. bag and the containers of liquid within it not more than 3 oz. If your liquids don't fill the bag, I don't think it's a problem if there was also kleenex or a toothbrush in their too... is there?

I check my suitcase, so that's where the most of my toiletries are.

But in my carry-on, I use a clear cosmetic case. It has powdered blusher, lipstick, eye pencil, etc. and eye drops and a tube of concealer that are considered gel/liquid. As long as I pull it out from my carry-on, and put in separately in the bin, that was OK for me the last two times I flew.

From what I know, the liquids are to be separate from non-liquids. I know folks who have been embarrassingly reprimanded by security for having non-liquid items in their quart bags.

Again, it's a matter of what you're willing to risk. I'd rather just put the liquids in the quart bag by themselves than get pulled to the side by security because they're in a bad mood. Of course, other than nail polish, perfume and lens cleaner, I check my toiletries (the former two are glass bottles, the latter is for the camera).

I thought it would also be nice to be at least one person who isn't adding more plastic baggies to my landfill.
I sent the picture to TSA to ask them - interesting to see if they actually respond.

Well, it was a thought - thanks for the comments.

I was curious and just read the entire TSA webpage on this. It says the gels/liquids have to be in the clear ziplock, etc. It does not specify anything about only liquids in the bag or that other toiletries can't be included in this same bag.

Sure, I do think it's easiest simply to use a normal ziplock with only liquids and gels.

My situation was all my toiletries and what I thought of as liquids/gels were in my checked luggage, but they questioned a couple items in my cosmetic bag in my purse. It was no problem dry and liquid were mixed, but he just said I should have had the cosmetic bag out of my carry-on separate in the tub at screening.

Suze - the TSA doesn't say a lot of things that it did at the beginning. Now they sort of just "summarize" the rule. Again, I know people who have been told it's an absolute no no - that the liquids have to be in a separate container.

Whether you'll get stopped is another question and one you have to decide for yourself if it's worth the risk. For me, it's such a minor thing, that I just do it.

Travelnut - I've been using the same ziplock since the rule began, so I'm not adding to the landfill either.

Your liquids need to be in their own clear quart size ziplock. It needs to be packed "comfortably", I read to mean so they can see everything in the bag easily.

I now travel with the liquids bag and another small dry toiletries bag that isn't clear.

If you want to mix after you clear TSA for the rest of your trip, fine. When passing through security, however, do yourself and everyone in line behind you a favor; sort out your liquids and put them "comfortably" in a clear zip lock baggie.
