Hi Krista,
It is a brand new resort.
You can make up your own mind, but I would never go there because they built the resort on top of turtle nesting grounds that had been there for 1000's of years.
The company that owns the resort bought the property and developed it during the corrupt prior Yucatan governor's (who is now in jail) reign over the loud protests of conservationists.
There are many really beautiful places to stay along the Mayan corrider - I personally would not pick that one.

If you are a nature love I would highly suggest it. If you have kids I would suggest it. If you do not have kids, I would almost suggest staying at the Aventura Spa Palace, this is only 10 minutes away and is adults only with 6 different restaurants to choose from. We did day trip to Xpu-HA and loved it, but we were happy to return to aventura which felt like home and had better restaurant choices and activities.
Donna,
You can find extensive info on this issue at:

http://www.ucis.unc.edu/pubs/development/garpow.pdf

The prior governor - Villaneuve - is now in jail after being found guilty of many offenses. While in office, he oversaw the selling of the property Xpu Ha is on to people who promised to preserve it, and then promptly developed it. Why do you think Xpu Ha advertises its "turtle hatching" opportunities?

You're right Donna. My post didn't make sense because what the developers did was WRONG.

If anyone interested in Xpu Ha wants to stay there, you will encounter signs and/or environmentalists protesting the resort's being there...
